I pretty well ruled out my chin spoiler (and Comet hood scoop) but you guys are making me rethink it. Looks great.
Thanks Craig...and thank you for the idea! I know not everyone cares for the angle of the spoiler, but I happen to like it...so I decided to join the club! I installed mine with the valance on the car, although at one point I considered taking it off. I believe I used 8 fasteners. One of the reasons I wanted to install this besides the looks was to stabilize higher speed coolant temperatures. I've noticed that if I cruise along at 65 or higher for a length of time the coolant temp seems to creep up, sometimes 20ยบ. I've made a bunch of changes since July, including a different thermostat, Taurus fan and a different radiator and overall, cooling seems to be much better, but the freeway rise in coolant temp remained.... It's been pretty cold up here in MI since I put on the spoiler, but this past Saturday I had a chance to make a trip to a dragstrip with my dad about 100 miles from my house. The temperature outside never really made it out of the 40s, so not the best day for a coolant temperature test...but for whatever it's worth I saw no rise in temps on the freeway. I'll probably have to wait until next summer to really see what it does. The steering does feel more stable at higher speeds, but with a rack and the coilover suspension in front it was pretty stable anyway compared to stock. At least it doesn't feel like it hurt anything. Here are the pictures of how I mounted the spoiler. I had hoped that I could mount it using the existing bolts (like it sounds like Craig did), but I couldn't see how to make that work. It may be that it is possible with the plastic spoiler, but not so with the fiberglass one. If I ever decided to remove the spoiler, the holes along the front would probably not be noticable because they are underneath, but I put one on each end near each wheelwell that would be, although they are small holes. I just didn't want the ends of the spoiler flapping in the breeze...
thank you very much for the pics, i guess i'll take a trip to the hardware store and will mount my spoiler this weekend!
Mark...you mounted yours at the very BOTTOM of the valence. I did not mount mine that low. I will see if I can get some pictures this weekend.
All the recent pictures look great guys! Thanks for posting them. Just to add, I too read and was told by some old-timers and the parts guys that the original spoilers were plastic.
I'm ordering mine tonight, I'm not too worried about having fiberglass or plastic. Your Grabber looks so rad!
I had one mounted on my '76 Maverick. I had to make up a support to add some stability to the center of the chin spoiler.
