if welding a fabrication is not a problem, think a little more modern. like a coyote 5.0 or an ecoboost v6. both make tons of power and great gas mileage.
Not sure you understand how much $$$$$$$$ it takes to make HP in a flathead V8. I spent about the same amount of money as it would be to buy a brand new 5.0 Coyote motor to make 315hp with my flathead. It works out to be around $38 per HP where my 408 stroker motor only cost $9 per HP................unless you have a Real Love for a flathead it's just not cost effective......................I know............I've done that and been there!
My honest opinion.................a 289 is the same as a 302 and hardly anyone would really be able to tell the difference................I think a 300 6cyld would be great, but be prepared to spend some money to make it product HP.....................and while we are on the subject what budget have you set for your project??????????? Since there are some pretty cool guys on this site that have gone Non-Ford if you really want to stray away from mainstream how about a newer Hemi, you can buy older truck motors pretty reasonable........and they start out at 345HP.............put an aftermarket throttle body and make 400HP easy, or a supercharger and make 550HP....................and still get decent gas mileage.................I get 22mph with heavy 08 Ram Pickup on the highway and 17mph around town if I'm easy on the gas pedal..............if not I get 12/13mph. Ok, for you guys that think Ford Flatheads are neat, here is one in an early Falcon............................again, a pretty High Dollar Motor!
Cost is semi-important to me. I Expect to put some hefty cash in my dream car over time of course, but im not about to put in a $30,000 427SOHC or anything... the reason I stay away from too new of a motor is to deter from wiring harness nightmares and for the simple fact that carberated motors are simple, No ECU, no wiring harness, no MAF, no TPS, CAS, ECT i'm even going to ignore fuel injected. Seems to me that Just about everyone who has a maverick either has a V8 of some size or is planning to do a V8 swap. Thus more reason for me to stick with a I6 300. besides that, the local Toy Yard said they would sell me a rotating assembly with 90 day warranty for $350
With some fabrication you can put a carb and distributor (or crank trigger and coil packs) on any engine.
@ olerodder, Oh I have a buddy who's uncle built a flathead for the drags, they require alot of modifying and $$$ thrown at them. If he's building a sunday cruiser you gotta admit, a factory built flathead in a maverick isn't mainstream and would catch someones attention, haha.
Already mentioned, but I will say it again. Modern Hemi, LS chevy engines, new 5.0 or any of the above with turbo or blown induction. The sky is the limit. My 5.7 Hemi in my truck is getting old, and I see a slight chance it might be re-honed and put in my maverick in the near future... Not sure how hard it will be to mate it to my ford tranny, but oh well....
Gee, I know I smoked a Hemi awhile back with a built 400M(in a 77 F100), but your Hemi is REALLY slow.
:16suspect Well, why not put 3 or 4 complete SBF motors in the back of you warmed over F100 to make up for the difference in weight between the F100 (at about 4500lbs) and the Dodge (at about 6400lbs) and have a rematch....................lets talk apples and apples here, not watermellons and oranges. Better yet drive your F100 out West and we'll take both trucks down the strip.......Oh yes...............mine will already be there because it tows the Maverick...................and still gets 15mpg towing the Maverick and trailer (which is 4300lbs).....................I bought the truck to tow and ride in comfort with The Eagles tunes on the stereo and the air conditioner blowing "Cold Air"........................If I had wanted a hot rod pickup I would have looked for one of these....................................
It's really apparent here that: One, you did not proof read your post I quoted. And Two, you have no sense of humor.
I have been thinking about a late model v6 or even one from an early 70s capri for my 68 mustang project. but that will be after the other 4 or 5 projects that will never get done.
Out here 6cyl mavs are like 2:1 to V8 mavs. there's a thread on fordsix.com on how to build a big block six 11 second maverick. it's an article from back in the 70s.
Yes, I guess it's apparent............I got the part about smoking a Hemi with your warmed over 400/77 150, but the part....and I quote, "but your Hemi is REALLY slow", well I guess I missed the meaning of that part completely.................and yes, at my humor times kind of dry........:Handshake
