i bought a 1977 mercury comet last year, and i am starting to slowly fix the body, what i was wandering, is if with a little modification if mustang front frame rails and fender aprons will work as replacements, if there is any one on here who has done this, could you post pictures.
because the floor boards have rusted all the way through, the frame rails have rusted right off of the car and so have the approns
I really don't think the Mustang stuff will work. Different dimensions. Different angles, etc. You might want to post up some pictures so we can see what you have ahead of you. Honestly.....if it has too much rust...might be better off with another car.
the rest of the car was fine, i crawled underneath the rear end and looked at the rear frame rails before i bought the car, i thought since the rear frame rails were great and the body looked great, i just bought it, a week later i drove it and the license plat the was hold the carpet up fell off and thats how i found all the rust up front, the torque boxes are rusted all the way through, and so has the floor pans and frame railsup front.
You certainly couldn't use an entire Mustang engine bay as the dimensions between Mustang frame rails and Mavericks are different. And not saying that just the separate left and right Mustang frame rails would work or not, but it sounds like you don't have much to attach them to if the floors are all gone. Keep in mind that everything on your car is welded to something else and then to something else etc. What shape are your torque boxes in? Pictures certainly would be helpful.
Better of going tube chassis and making some suspension upgrades at this point if you really want to save this car.
my plans for the car when i bought it was to put a mustang II front suspension on it and put a 460 in the car, but the i was driving it one day and the carpet fell out from under my feet, and now i have a huge rust problem.
More the reason to start with a chassis that has good solid integrity When I began my build, every time i removed undercoating or paint from the chassis, I was expecting the worse and understood that I might get to the point of replacing something very important to the car or maybe even starting over with a better platform. I got lucky that the areas that needed work were isolated areas. Parts of the floor boards (not all of the floor boards) - an area of only one torque box - cowl - very rear area of the back frame rails. As I said----I got lucky.
i live in southwest Michigan, and i was actually expecting the car to be worse than what it was when i looked at it, but i only looked at the rear frame rails.
Yep, that's what I was thinking. If the body's that good, something like a Jegster Chassis. But then, it's more race car than street car..... So, how much money do you want to spend? Might be cheaper as suggested to just find a better car, and use that one for parts. I had to do the same thing, haven't regretted it a bit. Original car I bought gave me many parts for mine, sold some , used others, got more out of it by parting it out than it was worth whole.
