My question is this, after researching all the home options.
Chemical stripping, sand blasting, plastic blasting, walnut blasting, iron oxide blasting, SODA blasting..this is less toxic of the blasting I have seen..

What is the most cost effective, set up that wont kill me...and wont F up my paint when I get to that point.

I keep hearing SODA is evil... but if all you have to do is pressure wash with a soap/water mix not sure how thats evil.

Sand.. silicosis no thanks. Chemicals, keep reading they will kill you from exposure or give you cancer.

And if your suggestion is to pay someone, whats a "FAIR" price to pay for paint removal?

The way I understand it from the blaster guy is SODA leaves a chemical residue that needs to be removed before painting. Pressure washing with soap and water is not gonna neutralize this residue. The blasting guy did use soda on the Grabber Spoiler but used GLASS on the metal. He made sure to tell the painter what got soda blasted so that part got prepped different for paint than the rest of the car. With GLASS blasting all that was needed to prep for epoxy primer was a good blowing off with the air hose.

I would use stripper then cover it with mask paper and let it sit. My painter taught me how to do this for my car. I guess the idea is the stripper penetrates better with the paper over it. A bonus was most of my paint and stripper stuck to the paper when removed. Worked great but yes you need to wear a Charcoal mask and well ventilated area. Oh and dont lean over the car and get stripper on your underarm. Ask me how I know.LOL.

Glass, I haven't read up on.
The only real negative I can see with SODA is, that its to smooth and have to rough it up for paint adhesion.
I don't understand why anyone would put vinegar on metal.. as vinegar is caustic and would cause surface rust, on the fast.
I even was considering the DRY ICE blasting till I saw the cost of the equipment. 10k-30k for a small unit. Then the media is 8 dollars a lb. With a rate of 5 lbs a minute. Not cost effective I think.

Hmm, Not sure I want to wear expensive breathing apparatus, and trust myself to avoid chemical exposure to my flesh. As I can imagine what, happen to your underarm.
I use to when I was younger work with industrial acetone. On a daily basis and got nerve damage in my hands from it.
I have no idea the long term effects of exposure will be.

The more I am responding to your postings...the more paying someone seems wiser, and less deadly to my health.

After watching an episode of Ricks Restoration on tv, they had a guy come in and used dry ice. I though that was pretty cool :D

Chemical stripping is a messy job I always used the spray on stuff for aircraft on a warm day, very toxic and not friendly to the environment though

I will be honest, being good for the environment is a concern for me, but its a far second to my health.
That dry ice blast would be great, if it wasn't for the freaking cost. Even though you would still have to sand or rough up the metal for painting the car.

So tempted to wait till July find a open field somewhere and strip chemically.
If I did it in my yard, I would be fined, and or jailed I am sure. I got a you can't work on your car in your drive way speech from local police last week.
All I was doing was changing my oil, and filters.

That's outrageous!! What government passed THAT law?? Wouldn't be surprising to see a rule like that in SOME subdivision covenants but I don't think the police would be involved in covenant enforcement. Its amazing what we put up with sometimes.

Kind of funny if you think about it isnt it? You can arm yourself to the teeth but my god dont you dare work on a car. Opposite here. Ok to work on my car even on the street. Dont get caught with a hand gun out of its safe though without a travel permit to the shooting range.
I can go buy 50 military grade SKS rifles tomorrow though with a trunk full of ammo boxes. Thats OK. Dont even mention hand gun...its like a bad word here.

    Post Falls, Idaho.
Home of the former small town awesomeness. This place has gone to the dogs in the last 15 years. I want to move sooner rather than later.

Yeah Darren Odd isn't it? I don't know where I will end up in the future, but it sure wont be north america! lol.
    Thinking North Korea ..... j/k.

I sent an email to the mayor of Post Falls just for fun. Asked if it was true that no one could work on a car in their driveway. :rofl2: Wonder if he/she will answer.

He probably wont respond. And you can't even have a car parked for longer than 72 hours or get a tow ticket on the window.
Can't have any vehicles not parked in garages on your property period..including any recreational vehicles.

Yeah I grew up here, its only gone to hell in the last 15 years.
Most people blame it on the "CALIFORNIANS" funny enough 89% of the people who moved here are from there.. but they mean the city council who are all hard core CALIFORNIAN political types..lol

Funny. I moved to California from Idaho and have never heard anyone blaming a Idahoan for our screwed up State.Usually the South and North just blame each other.
