Went to the track last night. Car sounded great. i was excited and ready to run. Nice burn out. Pulled up, hit the trans break, Let the button go and.....BAM...broke the rear end. You can push it in park. No noise, so it's the pinion or axels. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
That's a bummer Robbie. Plans to upgrade for this season? Or just get it running as soon as possible.
Well that sucks..was wondering what you were going to run!...hopefully you get it back together soon...
"that racing"... I thought that's why people took their cars to the track...to find the...weakest link...
Funny thing is it's a 9 inch. I have been beating this rear for 10 years. New motor, more power, Bam...LOL..Oh well. Probably needs new axels anyway. Last time I looked at then was 2, maybe 3 years ago when I did the brakes. Should fix it by the end of the month if it's only axels.
Well got it apart. When I bought the car I was told it had a full steel spool in it. It had a mini spool. Thats what broke. The 28 spline axles look good. No twist yet. But while I got it apart i'm going to up grade to a steel full spool and 31 spline axles. What the heck. It's been down 10 months, why not a year. Oh well
Not really. We had 28 spline axles in the Fairmont for over 5 years with a 393" Cleveland, a Jerico four speed, and weighing right at 3000 lbs.
That's pretty good! When I was younger and dumber, I kept the 28 splines in a rear I was using...and they didn't break...but twisted really bad. They were shortened by Moser and resplined though to fit a narrowed rear...maybe that was the issue. I think I still have them around the shop somewhere lol...I'll have to take a look...I've just been wary of them since then.
Good (and bad) to hear you got it figured out. Will you have to make any changes to your housing when you move up to the 31-spline axles? Like housing ends or anything?
I dont think so??? Got a fellow racer who has a rear end shop. I'm going to have him set up the center section for me.
