steel wheel codes???

    So, I was painting the last 2 factory steel wheels from the 76 today, and when they were side by side, noticed they're different widths.

    The larger one has a "J2" stamped near the valve stem opening, the smaller has a "J3".

    These are both Disc brake wheels off the 76 with the larger hub diameter.

    Was the smaller (maybe 4.5" wide) for the front, larger (6") for rear?

    Is this normal? Or do you think they were mismatched along the way?

    1972 Maverick Grabber - Color: Orange Also, 1976 Ford Maverick 4-door, 1977 Mercury Comet 2-door.
    Mavericks came with a matching set of either 4 1/2" wheels or 6" wheels. I would say somewhere in the past....a previous owner switched one of the wheels out.

    What option determined the wheel width when the car was new?

    Honestly....I don't know. Never been able to figure that one out.
