This isnt for my car but wanted to get some advice from the paint experts. My brother is leaving for Officers training, some kind of fast track program is what i hear. Im not real versed on the military lingo. So his wife call sme yesterday and said she wants to get his Falcon painted while he is gone. She said he has talked about wanting it flat black. Well flat black wont look good for long. But what about a satin black or some form of low gloss black that is still washable and wont fade or chalk up. Ive read good things about DuPont Hot Hues Hot Rod Black. But still not sure if I should change his mind for him and go a different route to make sure its something that would be good long term. His car sits outside all the time so it needs to be something that holds up. Any advice is appreciated.
they have a...matt clear... that gives the black a flat look. you still wash and wax as any clear coated finish...:Handshake
On Hotrod TV or Speed Channel, I think used a flat clear. Might check your automotive paint store. Rick
I was just reading an article about the satin clears. think thats the way to go for sure. need to talk to a couple paint shop to see if theyve done it before. Only issue I have is the flat black is kind of trendy and gives it an unfinished look he may not like in a few years. I wonder if I should change his mind for him for his own good or just stick with what he wants for now.
If you change his mind for him you could be ready to re-shoot it if he doesn't like it. I wouldn't be happy if someone changed my car and didn't do what he knew I wanted.
I almost want to tell him his wife wants to get his car painted as a surprise so Ill know exactly what he wants done and if he dosnt want it done cause there may be other things he needs or wants to do first. So what does the "Bro Code" say about telling him his wife wants to paint his car for him as a surprise?
Yes, that's a good thought. Headliner or engine compartment redo are things he might want to do prior to painting. Do you plan on having all the trim removed? If not, how 'bout getting all the prep work done and shoot it with a dark gray epoxy primer for protection and save the top coat of his choice for when he's home? Some extra work but not huge. If you're going to have all the trim removed and reinstalled that complicates things. Can you engage him in an email conversation on what you've learned about the disadvantages of flat paints and get him to make an informed decision on what he wants without spilling the beans?
well the interior and engine bay is done. He is ready for paint just hasnt got to it yet cause hes been busy with school and work and training. There isnt much chrome to remove so the shop will have to deal with the bumpers, lights, grill, and the window stuff. Ive been working him in text messages trying to get somewhere conclusive.

Just did this Firebird a couple months ago with this http://www.5starxtreme.com/auto-bod...s/paints/8000-series-single-stage-paints.aspx It was $160 Canadian which is about 5 bucks U.S haha it's a ureathane that can be wiped down with quick detaler and doesn't stain like bbq paint
Im pretty sure I would want to go with a true 2 stage with the satin clear to make it last and be protected outside. He said he would want it the wet armorall look. like reflective to light but not mirror like. needs just enough gloss.
I'll get you a better pic of the Firebird it's really more of a semi gloss.I don't know what flat clear is worth where you are but it's about $450 a gallon here.
