has anybody done this swap and could tell me what size my drive shaft should be.i put a 91 efi 5.0 mustang motor with aod trans into a 71 ford maverick.i still have my stock 200 drive shaft and my 91 mustang drive shaft
I have eveything for the swap, just havnt put it together. I do know that if your prior trans was a C-4 you should have no problem using the shaft from your Mav.
I havent tried it yet but Ive also read that the Mustang shaft will fit the maverick too. I think Mashori did a write up on it.
Is the Mustang yoke longer than the Maverick yoke? I'm looking to do this too. Found a Fox Body drive shaft on CR and had the guy measure it, U-joint center to U-joint center was 45.5". My Maverick drive shaft is 46.5" so I didn't get it. Now I'm wondering if a longer Mustang yoke would make up the difference.
Look for Mashori's thread on it, maybe he has more specs. He bought a Ford Motorsport aluminum driveshaft and I think all he did was change out a Ujoint.
Many of us ran the stock shaft for years. Did yours bottom out in the trans or did you have it shortened the 1 inch so it would still have the same amount of movement available as before the swap? If only cutting one inch it probably wasnt needed to make it fit unless you were all the way in the trans or wanted to have more room to slide in the tailshaft. unless you have alot of suspension travel the shaft isnt going to move much in and out on the shaft. Now on a truck this would be more important.
That's pretty consistent with what I saw when measuring an AOD and Mustang drive shaft. The AOD was about 3/4" longer than the C4 but the Mustang drive shaft was about 3/4" shorter than mine. Looked like the AOD and Mustang drive shaft would have worked well together.
Used the C-4 yoke in a 91 AOD. To have the same amount of in and out travel in the transmission, which is evident by the wear pattern on the yoke, the driveshaft was one inch too long.
The drive shaft he bought was 45.5", U-joint center to U-joint center, just like the Mustang. I wonder if he has a 9" rear that might need the shorter drive shaft. My Maverick drive shaft is 46.5" with about an inch of free travel at the slip yoke. Its very confusing since similar setups seem to work or not work depending on who's doing it.
Mashori has an 8.8 rear now, but not sure wha the had when he did the swap. I have a 9" in mine but I still want to try my Mustang shaft out of my daily driver sometime and see how it fits. If you need to have a shaft shortened anyways you could go to the junkyard and get a aluminum drivshaft out of a 80s aerostar rear wheel drive. Usually about $35. and have it shortened to any size you need. fornt yoke should be the same and rear just needs a different ujoint. If the Mustang shaft DOES work then you can get a alum. shaft out of an AWD Aerostar and it bolts in to Mustangs with a ujoint change, would be the same for the mav.
well i had a stock 200 motor and tranny in my maverick so the drive shaft is skinny so do i use the 91 aod drive shaft and switch yokes and shorten it
