Hi guys. Looking for opinions on whether or not I should stay stock with this restoration?.. or use some red 71 GT stripes that came with the car in place of the factory black?

The car has red interior with a factory red vinyl top that I will be stripping the black rattle can coating off of. And I'm also debating on using red for the hood stripes to complete the "red stripes" theme.

I'm also thinking that the car would look awesome in gloss black with red stripes, red top, and red interior too. What ya think?

PS. some pics to help guide you in your input.

The engine will be freshened in the same red as well... though I will not be using the parker funnel web intake shown in this pic with my current cam. I have a polished offy 180 for milder street duty.

I will preface my thoughts by saying this: It is YOUR car.....do whatever YOU want.

But since you asked. After seeing the Marti report, I would say that is one extremely rare car. I would probably put it back original.

Yep.. I'm no sensitive sally and want it straight as you can give it to me here guys(that sounds kinda bad, lol). And yeah.. that's what my gut is telling me too, Craig. Or at least try to keep my mod's limited to the one's that are easily reversible. Like the red stripes for example.

It's a bit of a double edged sword for me here because I bought the car thinking that it would eventually be a resto-mod with a low-ass road racer theme. Coil-overs.. big sway bars.. big low profile wheels/tires.. big compression, high RPM's, and 6 speed.. etc.

That's actually why I got rid of my 71 drag pack'd Torino GT not so long ago. Didn't want to chop it all to hell due to the rarity, just to get where I wanted to be with it. Too much respect with a bit of a purist's mentality holding me back, I guess. Now I feel like I've got deja vu and I'm in the same boat all over again. Don't get me wrong here.. it's a nice boat to be in.. but I'm sure you get my drift.

Thanks for the time and input so far. Greg

Cut it up, and make it what you want, there isn't anything that can't be reversed, if you save the parts.

If you do veer from original get the 74 stripes they look a heck of a lot better than the 71 stripes. I hate the flat stripes.

I would keep to the red stripes but use a good counter colour for the main. Like a nice chocolate. Some sweet chocolate brown with a pretty pearl coat and the Red stripes and red vinyl roof. Look pretty sweet imo.

Then where you've got the black accent colours use like an eggshell or taupe.

It's very early on so far in the spec/color scheme process(yeah.. I tend to overthink stuff, lol).. but I'm leaning towards something like this so far.
I do hear you about the too-thin stripes on the 71-72's and I may(probably) end just going with paint instead of vinyl anyways.

    What ya think?

Those lines you drew are almost the lines the 74-75 stripes make. All you would have to do is extend them into your spoiler. I just can't recall if you can get a red stripe kit for a 74. Personally I like vinyl striping better than painted on. All comes down to personal preference. I just really hate white cars for some reason. I've got white with orange stripe kit and plan on eventually going flat black with orange. It should pop pretty nicely.

Yeah.. I can agree with that. I like the larger rear stripe bulge to compliment the rear quarters lines a bit better. Looks better froma distance too.

I'm also not ruling out just painting the car black with a similar red spoiler/stripe theme too. It's still early yet and I want to just get it roadworthy this year anyways. Just fun to think ahead a bit, is all. :)

I also think that your black/orange color combo would look nicer. You have an orange or tan interior on that car?
