This morning I got the engine and trans mocked up again so I could start the turbo kit fabrication..... After getting the engine and trans in place I decided I needed to lower the rear of the trans a little(driveshaft was going to be pretty colse to the floor due to how low the motor is mounted in the car)..... So I notched the center of the trans crossmember out, trimmed the removed piece up and then tacked the piece back in 1/2" lower then before(it worked out well, I will weld up after turbo kit fab is completed)..... Next I got the heads, intake, carb, carb hat, export brace and monte carlo bar all in place..... Looks like I won't be using the monte carlo bar because it makes it nearly impossible to get a tube up to the carb hat(I think I will have plenty of support with just the export brace as heavy duty as it is)..... I got the hood down so I could check the carb hat to hood clearance..... In the first pic you can see the hood is sitting against the cowl about 1/2" low, and in the 2nd you can see there is atleast 1/2" between the hood and carb hat so I have plenty of room..... Here it is with out the monte carlo bar, and with the BBK Fox Body shorties in place(I am glad the headers worked out because I really didn't feel like building a set from scratch)..... Here I removed the 2 bolt ball socket flanges from the headers(I will be putting v-bands on as soon as I figure out exactly where I want them to go)..... Also a pic with the headers in place after removing the flanges..... Here I put the cell, breather tank and radiator in place so I can figure out exactly where to put the turbo..... Maverick's don't have near the amout of under hood room the foxes do for fitting everything.....
Very nice build and documentation. I started with page 1 and enjoyed it all(other than the boat comment back on page 63). Looking forward to following the build from here out.
Sorry, mabye you should take your beer out to the garage with ya and get off the couch..... Thanks, glad you like it..... As far as the boat comment, that is just how I feel about them(they actually make a pretty good race motor, but not much low end torque for street driving).....
Spent the first couple hours tring to decide where in the holey hell to pu this turbo..... I finally settled on removing the fuel cell and breather tank from the right front corner to make room for the turbo..... Here it is with the turbo propped in place where it will be mounted..... The fuel lines will have to be modified for more turbo clearance(they were going to need to be changed a little anyways due to the intake manifold change)..... Next I removed the radiator and started fabbing the pass side header..... Here it is on the bench after welding..... and here it's bolted back in place......
I found this thread last night and I have been reading it from fromt to back. I think it took me about 10 hours or so. LOL All I can say is that your workmanship is above superb. Man, you are a master at this stuff. Thank you for all of the pictures that you have provided of your build. It has been a huge learning experience just looking and reading about what you have done. Again my hat is off to you. Quick question as I am not really familar with Turbos. Can you still run the N2O with the boost and if so what type of new mods/precautions will you have to make because of it. Again thank you for the learning experence and your readiness to answer questions during this build. You give us all something to strive towards. Humblely, Bobo
Thanks, glad you like it..... You can run nitrous with the boost although I really don't see a reason too..... If you need more power you can just turn up the boost..... Some turbo guys will run a small shot of nitrous like 50 HP as an added intercoolimg effect. Supposedly with just 50 jets you get alot more than 50 HP because of the added effect of cooling down the air charge.
I went down to the shop tonight with the intention of making the merge that goes under the turbo flange..... When I got there I pulled the header off the motor and laid it on the bench, looking at I had to do something about about the tube BBK indented to clear the steering shaft on a fox body..... I know it probably wouldn't hurt anything performance wise but it was just driving me nuts everythime I look at it..... Here's the indention I was talking about..... I tried to pull it out first but that just wasn't going to work..... So I cut a half shell out of the tube and cleaned up the edges..... I made the replacement piece out of another piece of tubing, fitted it and tacked it in place..... Next I welded it in..... and then cleaned it up a little.....
