It pretty much depends ok you're combo, but id say between 32 and 36 total. Trial and error will give you the best results.

I think GreaseMonkey hit it pretty close.
I only run 34/35 in 408ci race motor (with 13.5 to 1 compression) and if memory serves me, I had a 289 in a 65 Mustang 4spd, FSP cam, single Holley, headers and ran about 31/32.
It really depends on the cam/heads/compression.......etc., but starting out at 30 would be a safe bet and you can increase it a little at a time then take is out and drive it..................if it pings, back it off a degree at a time unitl it doesn't. Also, using a vacuum gauge can get you a good starting point also........................IMHO

Use the track to tune for best ET , start at 28* total and work in 2* increments untill it falls off

:slap:...again, why does it have to go to a race track to set the timing...

...bump it up untill it rattles, back it off till it stops...:thumbs2:

its not always best to have the timing right where it will rattle if you go any further advanced. ive had cars slow down long before they go into detonation.

on the street you can get a good idea by going to where it rattles. i would do this going up hill. that way you will have max load on the motor. dont expect that you will achieve the best timing doing it this method.

if you want the best you need to consistently test at a drag strip or on a chassis dyno.

I would think you need to tune for the best MPH...too many variables when comparing ET.
