I was lining up my rear bumper the other day, and this trim, is getting in the way.

I noticed a lot of cars don't have it. If I do remove it there will be holes where it screws in. I think I might remove it and then just shorten or reposition it so it fits with the new early bumper.

Have you encountered this problem or seen this trim?

since the small bumpers wrap up over the lower lip of the panel...You will have to re-locate the bumper...Remove the trim Or...Modify the trim so the bumper will clear it. Nipping the trim off at the bottom and allowing the end pieces to stop where they will meet the bumper is an option but...You will still have the holes to contend with if you eliminate the bottom portion...Good luck!!!

I will have to say.....I have never seen the small bumper with that style of trim before. Maybe that is why the factory did not put the two together before.

Maybe feasible but I am thinking it won't look right..

My 73 GT does not have that trim piece.. I believe it's a 74 and later piece.

I was just looking at Mojo's thread about a local car show and it seems he has the trim on his comet... looks like it's just on the top and stops at the the bumper...

    Appreciate it guys!

I think I might just take out a little of the trim on the sides and raise the lower piece above the bumper, see how it looks.

    Thanks again!

    Comet rear trim

    Hello again Tody:
You must be getting very close to putting your Comet on the road .
As far as the trim around the taillight housings, I left the bottom piece off and snugged the rear bumper "UP" just a little before tightening the four bolts inside the trunk. Bumper stayed up and covered the area of the missing trim. It didn't slow the cars down one bit and I never really got any comments about the missing trim at any of the gatherings I attended when I drove them. Ha.
I still have that "lower" trim somewhere around my shop but I don't know where... Anyway , looking forward to seeing more of your pristine Comet.

I've got an extra set of 73 rear bumper brackets if you need them. They should give you the clearance you need.
