Today I cut a piece out of my original drivers side door to send down to the Dolls with the replacement doors for repairs and paint prep. Other than that it was to stinkin' hot out to go any further
The repair is on the bottom of the door so it really wouldn't matter anyway but I talked to Jean about this grain yesterday. I found that using different size wire wheels in a drill cleans out any paint and dirt from the pattern and really brings it out again. She gave me a choice of a light coat of epoxy primer and let the pattern be seen or 2 heavier coats and have the inside of the doors be smooth. I haven't yet decided which way I want to go.
My prefrence is keeping the grain.. I seem to recall the grain had a rubberie feel to it. I'm getting to my doors next also so I'm checkin you out on this one
I have to cut out a good section of bottom door curved skin to give to Dale and I hope to have that cut out tomorrow. Then the doors can go down and Dale can get started on them. It's kind on neat that parts of the original door are being hacked up to fix the replacement doors and will be reunited with the car soon
The doors are projects themselfs .. I dread taking them apart. I have so many other things taken apart..
I hear ya' ... I have had my driver's door, laying on the my workmate bench for the last month. Keep moving my doorskin around the garage for safekeeping. glass needs to come out, and mechs. It is one of those "leaps" ... once I start it, it will be OK, but don't want to jump yet. Been working 50-60 hrs/week (M-F) for the last three. By the time the weekend comes, chores, the band, and "other peoples plans and agendas" have had to come first. Light week this next week ... may take some time and focus on mine for a day, finally. It will feel good to get it rolling ...
Well, after a week of working on getting my doors cleaned of all paint and bondo, they finally made their trip to Palmerton today and are in the good hands of Dale & Jean Doll Unbelievably, they both fit in my little "jelly bean" Suzuki SX4 with all of the seats folded down, except the driver's seat of course. I have a hard time driving laying horizontal I told Dale to see if we can keep the inside pattern to the metal after a light coat of primer and, if not, go with the 2 heavier coats of epoxy primer and make everything smooth. And yes, that is my official finger covering part of the lens in the last photo - damn phones Now on to something else
They're 40 miles away from me now, Gene so you can't make me go out and look-----again---again----and again You know, if they were still in the driveway-----I would
The red 1977 belongs to Jean and Dale Doll - only the doors on the ground are mine - Dale is doing the repairs to my doors and will also paint the car I just have the one Maverick, Everett
