I'm thinking about getting a '70 F100 shortbed step side (forget what Ford calls that style) pickup and a '93-'97 Crown Vic donor for front suspension/steering/brakes, engine, computer and wiring harnesses, transmission and rear disk brakes. Anyone on here done something like that?
Yes, I'm thinking a Crown Vic donor would be easy to find and might even be able to use the gauges. '03-'07 CVs have a bolt in aluminum crossmember and front track within 0.1" of the F100. The CV IFS drops the front end 4"-5". I'm not sure I'm up to another big project but I gotta consider it. All that room under the hood is REALLY appealing.
I have a 70 f100 short bed standard side bed. I really like it. Restored it years ago. Ive been wanting to lower it. Was thinking about just doing I beams. But I saw a guy at a show with the crown vic swap i the front and it looks like it goes togethor quite well. He was running a windsor motor though but a mod motor should fit easily.
Saw the F100 in your gallery. Nice truck! See http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum39/ (if you haven't) for a thread on the CV IFS install. It really looks like a good swap. Nice way to get IFS, disk brakes, power rack & pinion, and lowered front suspension. Think there is lots of room, even for a DOHC. But the idea of getting so many parts off one donor has me thinking of the SOHC.
It would look really cool with a paint scheme to match your Sprint. At least you would be putting a mod motor in an engine bay that has enough room for it, lower it a bit and new suspension and it would be a very cool ride. I have always wanted to do a Unibody big back window shortbed, I started doing a unibody longbed once and decided I did not want to put the work into it since I really wanted a shortbed, then the Maverick came into play and desire and money was gone
Wow, that's a pretty cool link, Thanks!!! I wonder how low you could get one of those trucks, I've always liked them, but they are pretty scarce around here....
Fat Man sells a (very pricy) kit to put the leaf springs under the axle and drop the rear 5". Think that would just about match the CV front end drop. Sounds like about the right amount to me.
That would be COOL!! But, don't think mine will ever see a trailer. Well, maybe the day I sell it ...
In a perfect world that would be great. Hard to go back to the Gathering with 3 women and no A/C. Also all the clothes and boxes going to the Gathering. I would trust the Mav right now as it has just about a brand new engine with less than 100 miles on it. Still working a few bugs out of it.
Ever since I came across the info on doing this swap I have wanted to do it. Would make a very cool truck!
