I want to get a roll cage in my 72 comet but I dont know how many points there need to be and where it all needs to be attached. nor do I know what gauge of steel to use I would guess like a 3-4 inch round tube? I would like to go from inside the car to the front end of the frame so when I delete the shock towers the bracing is already there I have a friend that can build it if its all pre bent like a kit. is there such a kit? any advise would be appreciated
Sounds like you are looking for a 12 point cage. My preference are the kits from S&W Race cars. I have installed about 6 of their kits. You can either go to the web site or you can call them. They fit like a glove and are very high quality. The people there are very friendly and will help you with all of your needs. They are not only a manufacturer of roll cages and chassis but racers as well. Here is the site http://www.swracecars.com/
X2 on the S&W...just be aware that they are in Pennsylvania...and shipping to Cali isn't going to be cheap. If you can find someone local that can bend one up...you may save some money...just depends on local pricing. if you're doing a full cage...as in a roof halo bar (runs from your main hoop to near the windshield along the roof of the car) and front down bars (which run from the roof halo to the floor) you will typically use 1 5/8" diameter tubing. If you are just installing a roll bar, without the roof halo or down bars...you will need 1 3/4" tubing. Thickness depends on the type of tubing you use... And those sizes are assuming the car is meant for drag racing...if it's for road race type events...they will have different tube sizing standards, and you will need to check with those sanctioning bodies. If you're just going for the pro-street look...and don't have any intentions of racing at sanctioned tracks...put what you want in it lol.
There are many cars with deleted shock towers that do not have a roll cage. If you are going to use it at the drag strip I'd suggest getting a copy of the NHRA rule book. They specify what you have to have and the size of the pipe. You'd hate to get someone to make one that doesn't know what the rules are, and then have to do it all over again. A lot of it depends on how fast you plan on going. Not sure what you are wanting, but just going from the inside of the car to the front is not a cage.
I called R&C a while back to ask them about reinforcement to compensate for the deleted shock towers and braces with their Mustang II type front end. They said they'd never heard of a problem and believed no reinforcement was necessary. But, I wasn't anticipating any mega HP or wheels up racing.
I dont plan to spend 50k on my engine but who knows as time goes by lol but I do want to race the car. I would love for the wheels to pull off the ground but thats a long ways off. the car is not going to be strictly drag. the pro street is probably more like what Im doing. I have no set idea as to how fast I want to go. I dont intend to end up with a fiber glass body that lifts up like a funny car or anything like that. I just want to run on the track and not be the slowest guy out there. the first time goal that I would like to get down to is the 10 second mark. another reason I want to go that fast is so I can blow the doors off of just about what ever I pull up next to on the street at the raceway here they dont seem to worry about any regulations. I asked what does it take to race there and they just said your car has to be complete and street legal. when I went last there were cars running in the low 10's and I dont remember seeing a roll cage in some of them
10 and no cage...wow sounds sketchy..i think it's 11.49 here if you don't have a cage and run faster than that, they kick you off the track.
my car was a chris alston cage and I walked away from a petty bad crash in april. The cage was a 12pt and by nhra i only needed a 6pt roll bar. I am glad I over built my car. The new car I am building to run super street will have chris alston 12 pt cage in it also because they work
rool cage Here in Ontario,NHRA regs specify 11:49 or faster requires min 6 point. 1 3/4 dia, 135 tho mild steel min. 10.0 or faster require a 10 point. CM or DOM pipe is .083. I figure NHRA regs are the same for all of North America. I hope to be in the 11s so if needed I will go with a 8 point,S/W cage and have it tig welded together.have fun
Just to clarify the NHRA 10.0 rule with a 6 point..... Car must have a stock floor pan and firewall, and the rule is actually 10.0 et or 135 mph which every comes first..... If the car exceeds either a cage is necessary.....
