After seeing the original silver on the grille & headlight doors being all faded, we decided to paint them black-like a grabber. Can't decide what shade to paint: Semi-gloss, low-gloss, matte,??? What did ford use originally? Like some opinions, thanks...
I have been using SEM Hot Rod Black, a catalyzed paint that is about as close as you can get to the factory look. About a 20% gloss is what you are after, so it is a bit shinnier than a flat but less gloss than a semi-gloss. It is not cheap but it is pro quality. Search SEM hot rod black to find some threads on it .......... Also, for plastic, SEM semi gloss #15243 spray can is great for interior dash plastics and vinyls
I used Mar-Hyde Black Satin Automotive Trim Coating. Before and after here.. http://smegnl.medina.oh.us/index.ph...icle&id=59:grille&catid=35:maverick&Itemid=54
gt grill im trying to paint my standered comet grill into a gt grill but i dont no what color i should use for the chrome i was thinking chrome spray paint but i want it to look right.
chrome spray won't look right and you might be better off starting with another grill if yours is in that bad a shape. Is it too far gone to be wet sanded and buffed?
2 versions of the Comet GT grill: black face with silver (argent?) edges and uses stainless steel snap-on trim on the 3 main horizontal slats (uses a unique grill that is designed to accept the trim, you can find them for $$$) black face with silver (argent?) edges to include the 3 main horizontal slats (this can be made from a standard Comet grill) Check out how Tody painted his: http://www.maverick.to/mmb/showthread.php?p=593426
thanks for sharing.. that's some good info there. I'll eventually be modding my grill.. so I may just put my original up for sale and chop up the more easily found standard type. That way one of the purist types can make good use of it. It's not like we have repro's and I'd hate to destroy one of the few decent grills left in the world just to get where I need to be on my rides look.
I think I used semi-gloss black on mine and it matched the headlight buckets. I also used it on the rear tail light area and the valances, front and rear. I also painted the radiator suport area so it doesn't show through the grill from the front view.
