A little cleaner and an aux fuel tank Got the power sprayer out and cleaned it outside, inside, and under the hood. It looks a little more respectable now and will be a lot more pleasant to work on. Got some Mud Wasps fired up when their mud huts went away. Got one with 3500 PSI when he was objecting. Ripped out the carpet and found holes in the floor. Don't think they will be hard to fix-- might not even require any bends in the patches. Patch panels are available if needed but I don't think they'll be necessary. I probably didn't rip up the carpet before I bought it because I didn't want to be discouraged. Doesn't seem like a big deal now. A friend that helped haul the truck yesterday came over "for another look" but brought an auxillary fuel tank and protection panel left over from a '69 F350 Camper Special he used to own. I've been reading the Ford truck forum and know that those tanks are just about impossible to find. Guys use them to eliminate the behind the seat tank when they can find one. Some guys are nervous about having the fuel tank that close and it also makes a little storage behind the seat. Aftermarket storage racks/cabinets are available to go in the place of the tank. That tank might be too long to fit in the short bed frame but, if it is, I'm thinking I can section it to fit. Made my day!!!
Jim- I have seen the truck several times but I don't know the guy personally. He's from somewhere around Apex/Raleigh.
Looked through the parts and I don't have the grommet for the in cab tank only the one for the optional second tank.
Haven't decided what to do with the fuel tank yet. Would be nice to install the aux tank I have and route the filler tube to use the cap on the cab but don't know if that's going to be feasible. If it ends up with a filler on the side of the box I'll let you know. OK, thanks for looking.
My 71 Camper Special had the auxillary tank. The fuel was controlled by a valve which was located on the rear section of the floor just inside the drivers door. There was a switch under the dash to select which sending unit was providing the signal to the fuel gauge. I don't see an easy way to use the cab fill on the other tank. Perhaps a later model fuel door and filler pipe grafted into the bedside would be a better option.
I haven't been under the truck yet to see how the tank would mount or even IF it will fit in the short wheel base frame. Or, how the stock aux filler tube would work with the side mounted spare. Will get to it in a week or two.
Forgot that it is a stepside, mine was a styleside. If I recall correctly the tank went inside the frame. Probably to long for a short wheelbase though.
5.8l Put a deposit on a 5.8L/351W engine in a '95 F150. Can't tell mileage on the truck because there no way to light up the odometer. Engine is quite clean and oil is too. Have a tentative plan to pull the engine on Monday. Picked up a rear fender with the indentation for the side mounted spare tire and have the mounting bracket on the way via big brown truck. Will have to redo the studs on the bracket for 5X4.5 lug pattern. What do I need to get 300+ RWHP out of the roller 5.8? Think I'm going carb, Air Gap, and MSD ignition. Guessing 300 RWHP will get the 3600# truck into the 12s with 3.73 LSD and drag radials.
Yesterday a friend and I removed and brought home a 5.8L/351W engine from a SMASHED '95 F150. Now to find a good 4R70W transmission. Anyone close to Raleigh have one with the sbf bell? Would have to be a '95 or later transmission behind a 5.8, 5.0, 4.2 or 3.8. Door tag should have trans code U.
Wow, you must have used a can opener....Did that truck roll? Hopefully it wasn't running while on it's side or upside down...
