Hey folks, so I went to get a quote for replacing my top today and was quoted $1,000+. It was said that I should have the glass removed to have the top installed thus the extra $500. Is this correct? Can you install a vinyl top without removing the glass?
I'd be finding somebody else. Doesn't sound like they know what they're doing or they're trying to get over on you.
From the factory, they went under the trim, but not under the gasket (that would never seal), and the material was trimmed around the studs that hold the trim clips on.
The tops are made in universial sizes and the one for your car, if it is a full top should run about $150 at the most plus the labor of 4 hrs give or take. I install them complete for $450 plus tax here in Colorado. Prices will vary but should not be much. Pull the trim clean the old glue off, prime and paint the bare metal, install the new top and reinstall the trim. The glass DOES NOT have to come out.
Thanks folks! He said he could do it for about $500 without removing the glass, but to do it the "right" way he'd need to take the glass out. The shop seems like they do quality work, as it was a fairly large area with a good number of employees, and the cars that were in the work area were all really nicely done, so I'm not too worried about the quality of work. I think he was just trying to up sell me.
