Just going through my Dragzine Newsletter and came on this, the strip is Maple Grove, the guy goes 9.95 without a roll cage and isn't even flagged by tech for no cage or license.................very quick little 4dr car! http://www.dragzine.com/news/video-...3l-swapped-ford-fairmont-goes-9-95-at-140-mph
That guy has a build thread on the turboforums, but can't believe he wasn't kicked out for not having a cage.
That would certainly be a little humbling to have a 4dr Fairmount stage next to me beat me to the lights when I have a 6.7l and he has a 5.3l............that is a sweat little car.
Yep cool, but... Welcome to 1955 when the SBC begin finding it's way under the hood of about every vehicle imaginable... As time goes on I'm bettin' we'll see more of these swaps because the fat girl 4.6(now 5.0) won't fit in many older chassis without cutting... Unless blown or has some $$$$ heads, the 4.6 won't make power anyway...
those LS swaps are hard not to consider no matter how blue your blood is. Hell.. I even thought about it for my Comet build for more than a few minutes. It's a good time to build another "under-spec'd" Ford bullet to set the Chevy guys straight though. lol I see tons of LS's with turbo's out on the streets these days. Super easy to just add bolt ons and end up with a solid 11 second car that is otherwise bone stock and still weighs 4,000+ lbs with all the boom-boom stereo goodies in it. Hard to dismiss that bang for the buck.. even if you are anti-Chevy.
You know, back some 40 years ago when I ran SS/IA (of which the class was dominated by Camaro's with SB's) the Ford was thought of as a "step child", and for the same money you could build a SBC that would run circles around the SBF. The Ford just didn't have the selection of "off the shelf" parts that Chevy did. Then it was pretty much a draw in the late 70's to the early 90's, but once again Chevy has pulled ahead in the SB world......and I for one would really like to build one again. Now, with that said I have to say the next leap for Ford will be with the Coyote 5.0...............the traditional OHV motor has just about come to the end of it's life cycle..................Chevy has been working on a SOC and DOHC SB and I'll bet even money it will replace the current SB.
You mean something like what Ford did back 1963 Gentlemen, meet the 255 CID Quad Cammer. Average HP - 825 @ 9600 rpm and was reported to have been pushed to 1440 hp on the dyno before it came apart and that was on 103 octane pump gas.
You forgot about the SOHC 312 that was developed in the late 50's. These are some of my favorite motors;
This is no doubt a Y block but how are the cams operated??? Has a conventional timing cover with no doubt a chain inside... Guessing this isn't the SOHC version you are referring to??? The other three engines sure look a lot like the DOHC 4.6 in my Marauder... Would no doubt be a lot of fun in a lightweight body, unfortunately wont fit without some serious cutting...
Sorry, that isn't the picture of the of SOHC Y block, just your normal everyday Gurney Westlake induction system meant for racing. The early 289/305 Gurney Westlake's had a problem of cracking out the main web area producing over 550hp back in 1967................so they used the 312 block which was much stronger and actually made close to 600hp over 40 years ago. The three pictures are your 4.6l DOHC, and all you need to do in Maverick/Comet is message those ugly shock towers..............................and yes it would be neat.
Didn't fprget, just skipped to my favorite. What started as a 260, ends up a 255, cranks 9600+ rpm all day, (500 miles) pounding out 825+ hp back in 62-63 just puts warm fuzzies in the cockles of my old ticker. But don't think I don't have some soft spots for the other SOHC's and DOHC's.
Just read a little on that Fairmont,he's running 20psi boost and a big shot of nitrous!! It's got no choice to run fast.Take away the boost and spray its a 11 second car.
as with all the 302s on here...take away all that didn't come "stock" on a ford Mav/Comet and you have a...14.5 sec. car...
