'70 two door Maverick, black vinyl top, shaved side markers and emblems, all stock chrome trim in place, 2001 Mustang "Mineral Gray" color, blacked-out grille and tail panel, all covered in matte clear, 15" 275's in back / 15" 215's in front, polished aftermarket wheels, Shelby drop in front / Cal-Tracs in back.

Goin' for a "street machine" look with a drivetrain to match. Also, was playing around with the idea of a 3-butterfly hood scoop (denser intake charge for the motor, not for cosmetics) mounted very low (maybe even slightly recessed) to the hood and painted body color with black butterflies.

Whaddaya think? I had this concept rolling around in the back of my head for some time and have 95% of the mechanicals already done. Just lookin' for some feedback/opinions from you guys before I tackle the cosmetics.

    Thanks,
    Eric

Sounds like a cool concept, just want to give you a heads up about the bird catcher... You dont get high pressure air close to the hoods surface. Mount your air scoop 3 to 4 inches above the hood to put it in the fat part of the air stream...That is if you want the ram air benefits at high speeds...Otherwise you just get cooler air (with a bit more density) nothing to write home about.

Heh, heh :D... not "butterflies," like the insect. A butterfly hood-scoop like the one in the pic below. It has 3 butterflies that move in conjunction with the throttle linkage. I also like 17's on a Maverick/Comet, slightly lowered. I think it gives the cars a very modern stance. A while back, that was the route I was going. Thomas Hackman did a great job with the Cobra wheels on his. The one he trimmed the wheel well lips on.

Good info. I did not know that. However, I'm just looking for a good way to grab outside air after reading a Car Craft article which cited Smokey Yunick's theory about lowering the air-intake temperature for a mild horsepower gain. He proved that "every 10 degree reduction in inlet-air temperature has the potential of increasing engine output by 1 percent." (link: http://www.carcraft.com/howto/ccrp_0604_install_a_hoodscoop/viewall.html)
I really wanted to keep the scoop close to the hood for aesthetics. I don't have a blower, so, a scoop stickin' out way above the hood seems kinda out-of-place to me. Like I'm trying to show off, or something. However, I appreciate the input. That's exactly the reason I started this thread. Thanks Mavman72!

I agree. That is why I want a 6-71 blower stickin' out way above my hood!

Amen brother. When I win the lottery, and I will :16suspect, I'm gonna go the 14-71 BDS on 512 cubic inches route.

Wow. That's a pretty sweet color combo. I like the gloss/texture contrast. Makes the burgundy really "pop." That's gonna look great when you jack the hood. Very different. In a good way. :thumbs2: Is the whole motor gonna be burgundy? What about the engine compartment walls? Having the walls black would spotlight/showcase the burgundy engine, but, burgundy everywhere would be a super-clean monotone scheme.

That was what I had in mind when I mentioned blacking-out the grille and and tail panel: flat-black grille and tail panel with metallic Mineral Gray (I like how the bronze comes though in direct light). The matte clear ought to give a "frosted" appearance to the metallic, but, I don't know what it'll do to the flat black, if anything.

512 is kinda small for a maverick, don't you think? :cheers2:

Hmmm... I don't even know what the biggest stroke you can do to a 460 is. I'd hate to have to do a Merlin 800 c.i. Then it wouldn't be 100% Ford.

I don't even have it on, yet. The car doesn't have one originally. I just bought the trim pieces in case that's the route I went with. Not a big fan of the vinyl, huh? Any reason in particular, or, you just don't think it would look good?

I just think Mavericks, and most cars in general look much better without a vinyl top than with one. I also don't like the destruction they cause to the roof over time, although I suppose nowadays you can seal it with POR-15 first.

I would say dont do the vinyl top it takes away from teh street machine thing. every scene has its own special thing like classic driver cars have a vinyl top hot rods or race cars usually have a stripe or two on them and low riders usually have either a different color roof to accent the lower color or they have a mural or pattern of some kind

I wouldnt put a vinyl roof on my car unless I was building it for a nice old ladies kinda SUPER CLEAN CLASSIC look

the engine bay is flat black and just the parts you see in the pic is whats burgundy. I plan to paint the whole car that hotrod clean flat black and have two stripes painted to match the powder coating. as for the interior the seats are black with a hawiian red cording and stitches I already cut aluminum diamond plate for the door panels those are most likely going to be powder coated burgundy also then I need to pick up more diamond plate to build a console out of then have that powder coated burgundy wrapping up the interior with black carpet black dash pad black shift knob and black headliner :thumbs2:
I almost forgot to really set it all off Im going to put in burgindy powder coated comet emblems in the head rest of both front seats and prolly black comet emblems on the door panels

In the 70's and 80's when Street Machines were the norm, everyone loved vinyl tops, that was one of the things guys would brag about.

Hmmm... I'll give it some more thought. I've been going back and forth on it for a while. I just recently bought the trim pieces, just in case. I guess I could paint it, drive it around for a while, then decide if I wnanna go with it. Thanks for the input. :Handshake

Yeah, never really paid any mind to vinyl, at first. Then one day, a while back, I picked up a Car Craft and saw a Chevelle :hide: with a not overly-done raked stance, blower, and vinyl top. I thought, "man, that looks really good. I wonder how a Mav would look with that kind of set up." Started looking at pictures of Mavs with vinyl tops and it grew on me.

I think that'll look really good. I like hwo you're carrying the theme trhoughout the vehicle. Seriously though, that texture/gloss contrast is wicked. I look forward to seeing the car done. Please send me pics. :thumbs2:

That's kind of what I had in mind, but, without the "stink-bug" stance and a more modern paint scheme. I guess I'll just have to see if I still want the vinyl after I drive it around for a while.
