as i sit here day dreaming i was thinking of a new mod for tail lights and as i was looking i came across some and wanted to get some opinions i haven't checked for space yet but this is only the wind passing through my ears. the first is 15" by about 2 would need a flat base behind with a small hole to pass the pigtail through and screws down to the panel. maybe stack two high per side? the second is more of a 6" oval trailer light that he has available with a chrome like ring. any thoughts?

I agree that the first one looks decent enough.. but I think it would look odd with only 2 per side. Kinda like the old duster without being recessed at all. Maybe find another one similar but slightly thinner and use 3 per side? Or even french them in? I also think the first one looks better.....................and with the LED's you could set up a sequential turn signals.
I vote for the first one - does it have all the fuctions of a complete tail light (brake, turn and tails)
As far as putting them in maverick or bobcat housings i found a ton of listings for replacement bulbs setup with led attached to standard bases, 1157, 1156, and 194. that is the same e store i found my picture in http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-LED-15-Sl..._Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item56470e618 and chrome rings at 5 each?( i round off a lot) i haven't had time to look at the fit. just thinking last night, then work late, pick up garage, then tried to put in champion radiator tonight and it doesn't want to go easy. want to whine but this isn't the place. I think on the sequential part there are only three leads so you would have to break the casing unless you meant stepping them vertically they are a regular stop turn tail light
I tried the 1157s and had a safety issue... one set I got only projected a...RED DOT... in the middle of the tail light lens. another set only gave off a faint...RED GLOW. they may have improved since then. ......
they advertise as stop/turn/brake lights but I can only assume that they would not have a dual element effect like an 1157 would where it stays lit at lower voltage on the running light portion.. and then increasing in brightness as the turn signal doubles up on the voltage. They look like plain old marker lights to me but maybe there is a portion of the circuit board that adresses the turn signals requirement when in use. Probably shuts the running light signal down to let the turn signal flash completely on and off if I had to guess. I do know one thing for sure.. if I were to invest all that time and cash to do the mod.. I'd be buying extra lights as replacements for when those things burn out or lose a few LED's. Mainly because these types of parts don't stay around forever and you could have a hell of a time finding exact replacements later on. In other words.. good luck finding the exact same thing 1 year from now on e-bay as off-shore parts and their sellers continue to come and go. lol PS. as far as the sequential usage.. that would only work "per light strip" with each individual light strip attached to the controller. Otherwise you'd need to gut the thing and break all the LED's onto individual circuits rather than the common one they now share. Youd be better off building your own with individual components and mounting/wiring however you want. The shelby LED lit retrofit's look awesome and it would be cool to see some of our cars lights mod'd too. That Shelby Bullit Mirror looks cool too. Damned Mustang guys... they get all the good stuff.
They don't work like that. A dual filament bulb has two separate circuits (that are independently triggered) which cause the perceived increase in brightness. These circuits always get 12v, or whatever battery voltage is available at the terminals...
not sure what you thought I meant there.. but I do understand the dual 12 volt leads tying into the bulbs socket more than I want to. I was basically just saying that those lights would have to have the controller chip built in to limit juice to the LED's during running light operation(unlikely) to enable dimming them enough to use as running/parking lights.. while then allowing full bright for when the turn or stop circuits come on. Those lights likely just cut power to the bulbs on the running light circuit when you turn or stop which of course some cars flasher switch will do anyways. IOW.. on/off only.. not dim/bright like the dual filiment 1157 circuit is usually set up for. And also.. that that the LED's would have to have seperate circuits/leads from each bulb for the sequential controller to be able to work it's magic across the strip. Otherwise it's just one big bulb to the controller. I converted to full LED lighting all over my snowmobile trailer a few years back and that one sure looks like a simple ON/OFF type marker light to me. okay.. so I looked again and it's right there in the picture(3 wires/2 circuits) and desription. [SIZE=+2] Obviously it pays to read further in and look at the bold print before commenting too much, I guess. lol [/SIZE]
feel free. In a nutshell.. all I was trying to say is that either the light is chipped to control(lower) the voltage for the running light circuit to give you the dim/bright effect as the flashers run... or on/off... Either way the chip controls it. or the running light portion of the strip would have to have some bulbs left inactive(not nearly enough bulbs to do that on this design) until the stop lights come on.. thereby making it brighter as more LED's kick in. Anywho.. I just redid my Blazers front wiring harness to rid it of the remainder of the factory AC/emmisions crap and that's how mine's set up from the factory flasher. The single filiment side marker light just goes on/off in opposite timing of the front signals pattern to give the effect of alternating signal lights for improved visibility. Plan on using the same trick with my Comet too.
they may get the cool stuff but did you check out the prices 150 for 4 bulbs and a flasher, 570 for the shelby sequince unit, that is almost as much as some of us paid for our cars.
when i started this thread with showing the two styles of lights i didn't say anything about a lay out. with the 15" ones i was thinking about horizontal with at least 2 and after measuring it looks like 3 would squeeze in maybe top and bottom towards the gas cap and the center one towards the outside with a sequential flasher. and as far as the oval lights go mount them vertical or slightly angled off vertical in a row of 4 per side and sequence them. of coarse find a chrome ring. and these were picked for ease of finding a replacement at any truck shop.
