What if it is NOT exhaust drone? Then what?

I got to drive it a long way today to work and back, since truck is in the shop.

I notice that not only do I hear it drone, I feel the power pulsing with the drone. Sorta feels like when you have a wheel out of alignment on a shopping cart and you push it fast, and it wobbles and gets harder to push, then as the wobble goes out of sync and the wheel straightens out, it gets easy to push until the wobble begins again.

I took some videos with sound on my phone, I may upload them to youtube. At lower rpms, around 2500, you can actually hear popping in the background like it is missing, that comes and goes with the drone.

I will have to hit the header tubes with my infrared thermometer and see if I see any significant differences on any of the tubes.

I was also thinking of pulling the mufflers off and hitting the road without them, with just the tubes into the H-pipe, and then open. Would the drone go away, or would it get worse if it is exhaust drone?

Any ideas or suggestions?

 

I suggest what I suggested 2 years ago (or however long it has been....starting to sound like a broken record )...a full exhaust system with tailpipes over the axle and out the back of the car....and get rid of the flowmasters. Then say: Goodbye drone!!

Oh yeah....if you run just the pipe with absolutely no mufflers....you will wish for the "drone" back.

 

Isn't there another guy near you with a Maverick? Maybee he can go for a ride and shed some light on the subject.The internet is a good tool sometimes,but other times its tough to diagnose things such as sound.Sometimes a second set of eyes/ears is just what you need.

 

I gotta disagree with you on that...I say trouble shooting an electrical problem is worse than sound. Although I will agree with Craig.

I have flowmasters out the back and what Scooper decribes is similar to what my car does. The drone and vibration from the drone reminds me of a out of balance driveshaft. It pulses and you feel it higher and lower, not really feeling a loss of power but I guess it could feel like that as the pulse comes and goes at a constant cruise on the hi way.

 

I guess when people say..."I like the sound of...flowmasters"...they are talking about on someones car that just drove by, not one they are riding in...

Exactly, and it feels like the u-joints are bind at the highest point of the drone, and it feels like it is actually putting a little strain on the engine.

But I know it isn't u-joint or driveshaft.

And YES all you broken records, I will replace the exhaust, eventually. And probably sooner rather than later.

 

What you're describing is called "harmonics" It's completely normal. Change something in the engine or exhaust and you'll change the harmonics. Otherwise, you'll drive yourself nuts, like a dog chasing his tail.

I just turned 40, and this year, it has become annoying. But you are very correct, I used to love the old airplane engine sound.

I still like the background actual exhaust sound, but not the vibrations that go with it.

Maybe this weekend, I will mess around under there and see what I can stab in without having to redo the entire exhaust system. Just a mufflers-back swap. And recycle as much of my current setup as possible.

 

Add a 12" glasspack blank in each tailpipe. Worked for me and it sounds great.

 

I used to use use hush thrush they weren't too loud but sounded good when you opened it up but now they are too loud for me now I like a set of stock mufflers with an h pipe

 

After the Flowmasters, or instead of Flowmasters?

I figured I would just pull off the flows and stab in a Turbo or Magnaflow (something with fiberglass filler inside) in their place.
