    I have a chance to pick up a 9" posi rear at a decent price....but the guy who has it say's the only problem is the carrier has is a crack in the "clutch housing" and it (the clutch housing) will need to be replaced.

    What is a clutch housing? I've tried looking it up, looked at exploded diagrams.....no "clutch housing" found or listed on the diagrams

    So, a clutch housing by any other name is?.....

    I don't think you're gonna find it in that diagram......it's an open diff. I always thought the housing was/is part of the carrier, which equates to it being junk.

    Yes, the diagram shows the carrier.....................although it is not marked as such.............................if the carrier housing is cracked, the guts could be junk................plus finding another carrier could cost you $200/300.
    I would keep looking or just buy a new one........................here is a picture of traction lock 9".

    Here is the cost of good used carrier housing;

    LOL....read the whole item title in that first link....

    Ford FE 9 inch possi 350 ratio31 spline third member with clutch housing damaged

    That's the carrier I'm asking about.

    I already found a 9" housing with 31-spline Currie axles and brakes, length and spring perches perfect for my Falcon Gasser, or could easily be adapted for my Maverick,....it just needed a third member......so, I went to ebay and found that one you linked. It was more affordable than most, and the seller says everything works and turns and looks good,.... except for the crack in the "clutch housing" that would need to be replaced. At that price (if replacing the "clutch housing" isn't too expensive) I'd end up with a complete 9" rear set-up at a very reasonable price. (The curse of working on a budget....sometimes you have to Frankenstein to get what you want/need)

    So, you think this is what he's referring to?....

    The factory piece is known to cracked around the heads of the bolts that secure the ring gear. The clutch and steel plates are under that part of the housing. Likely why they are calling it a clutch housing. I would describe it as as the differential side plate. There are aftermarket replacements available.

    What Maverick1970 said is correct.
    If you are building a 9" I'd give Bryant here on the forum a personal message............since he works on rearends for a living, and ask him.
    For drag racing I use a nodular Clutch Carrier Housing and would not ever use a cast stocker...............but they are a little more money.

    Since I run on the strip only I haven't used a posi/traction lock for a lot of years......................only spools for me.
