I want to change my front hub to a 5 bolt lug. Can the drum & hub be split without changing the backing plate?

If you want 5-lug front drum brakes, email me as I have a complete (spindles, backing plates, etc) I can sell you. Email me DIRECTLY (see below) if I can help.

I bolted 70 Mustang brakes (inc. backing plates) right on mine to convert to 5 lug. I used Mustang brake hoses and had to make an adapter line.

I can't speak for other years, but the 70 Maverick is supposed to have the same spindles as a 70 Mustang. I took a shot and it was just a bolt on. The only issue I had was 70 Maverick brakes hoses aren't made now so I went ahead and ran a new brake line like a Mustang so I could use Mustang hoses now and in the future.

I don't mind drum brakes, but if I ever go with a V8, ill probably do a disc conversion.

Yep, 70 Maverick drum spindle (and all Maverick drum brake spindles) are the same as 70 Mustang. You just need to change the backing plate, hub, drum, brake parts.

I don't understand. What's the difference that needed a new hard line?

The old 70 Maverick hose is run different than a Mustang. Since I chose to use a Mustang hose, I got a Mustang hose bracket (the part that bolts to the frame and holds the hose via a c clip) and ran a new line more like a Mustang. I just joined it to the old line via a line connector (not a union) and a reflaired factory line. An easy swap.

Just for new readers - this only applies to Mavericks made 8/25/69 or later - earlier Mavericks have a different spindle shared with only the Falcon.

Part of that whole 69.5 differences thing .............. :thumbs2:

Hmm.. Thinks I should relook at how I have my new brake hoses run. Does the way its run affect it's performance or just looks? Have never put that much thought into it

Lucky for me I have a 68 Mustang sitting in the garage. I ran the new Mustang hose and mounted it to the frt frame rail just like the 68 Mustang so I was sure it would have the proper clearance. The line I made just joins the Maverick brake line to the Mustang hose. My hard lines are good, otherwise I would've just ran a new line from the master cylinder to the hose.

Owning a 70, you run into certain issues that you don't run into with other models....like parts availability. When I run into this I try to use Mustang parts so they will always be available.

Another 70 issue I ran into was the gas tank. Mine was funky inside so I just went with a fuel cell mounted to a floor insert I made so it's a bolt in just like a factory tank. I thought about cutting the trunk floor up and modifing it to accept a Mustang gas tank....but I figured my luck would be after I hacked up my trunk, someone would start reproducing 70 tanks. If they ever do, all I have to is unbolt this as an assembly and bolt in a factory tank.
