Let me get back to you. Based on recent info from the Ford truck forums, it looks like I shouldn't change the pedal. Following info was posted last night by a retired Ford parts guy. Holy crap!!!!
Wow, another reason I dont like the Dent Sides. I must have been thinking about my dad's 73 when I was picturing the larger brake pedal. The Bumps are so much simpler then the Dents. there are a few quirks. Like the 1970 power brake booster used a 2 piece pedal rod, only one piece comes with the booster. The 72 has a one piece pedal rod so you wont have to search for a second piece like if you were to get the 70 booster.
Wow i have owned at least 8 73-79 pickups and Broncos had no idea there was that many combinations for pedals/boosters/cylinders.I'm sure i have missmatched some stuff over the years lol!
More Progress Got the short block assembled and set in the chassis for test fit of things. Heads and manifold are just sitting on the block with a couple of bolts in each header. Everything fits great. Only problem is the flanges on those bargain headers are warped. If I snug the bolt down on one end of either header the opposite end has about 1/8" gap to the head. Might take them to the machine shop and see if they can flatten the mounting surfaces. As they are, I expect they'll leak.
Looks like it's coming along vry nice. Great lookin engine. What did u have done to the 5.8 internally? U add the alum heads?
be sure to use the 325 or 327 rear gears for proper throttle response that is what gives the vic the rapid acceleration.
Had the block hot tanked, checked out, cyl honed and crank polished. New rings and bearings in the stock rotating assembly. If the piston-to-valve clearance is OK then the bottom end stays stock. Yes, new Dart Pro 1 alum heads with 185 cc intake runners and 2.02" intake valves.
Its a custom grind and 1.6 roller rockers. Not overly aggressive but piston/valve clearance has to be checked. Stock pistons and 2.02" valves could be an issue. We'll see. If there is a problem, the solution will depend on how severe it is. Worst case, a stroker kit will fix it.
Heads and intake are installed. Set a 600 Holley on the intake and a drop base 14" air cleaner on top. Everything fits nicely. Got the header flanges flattened by the machine shop that prepared the block. Checked the piston-to-valve clearance and its OK Exhaust valves have lots of clearance. The intakes are closer at about .100". Got a air pump delete bracket and pulley off ebay. 79 95 Mustang 5 0L Billet Aluminum Smog Pump Eliminator with Install Info Listed | eBay There won't be a power steering pump on the engine for a while -- not until the CV steering/suspension/brakes transplant is done. The second attachment shows the planned routing of the belt. That's a 91.5" belt with a 1 1/4" socket between the belt and (nasty) alternator pulley. Looks like an 87.5" belt will fit. Hope so -- one is on order from Rock Auto.
Had to get 302 frame stands off a junk yard truck then the 5.8L/351W bolts in. The transmission mount will no doubt be different for the 2000 F150 transmission. Hope to use the original cross member for the trans mount but will probably have to slide it back on the parallel frame rails and drill new holes. From what I read that transmission should fit in the tunnel OK. The truck is about 600 lbs heavier than the Mav but it sure is nice to have room to put bigger stuff.
Acc Belt with Smog Pump and PS Delete The 87.5" belt arrived today and its just right for the 351W with 4.5" smog pump delete pulley, no PS pump, and the routing shown. The belt just slips on with the tensioner fully rotated. I know some guys just remove the smog pump and run the belt from the alternator, by the tensioner and to the crank pulley. I tried that routing but didn't like the angle of the tensioner. It could actually over-rotate and LOOSEN the belt. Read one posting where the belt jumped off with that routing and I wonder if the tensioner over-rotated. Anyway, just thought I'd post the belt size with this setup in case someone needs to know what belt to get. If anyone is going to delete the smog pump and not get the delete pulley I have a new 91.5" belt I'd let go for half price.
