They're going to be 2" square tube with 1/4" thick wall..is it way overkill or what? i'm not sure how think most use...because this tube is pretty damn heavy and i don't want to weigh my car down this much if it's not needed.

Not overkill, but make sure to get it fit high up into the cars floor so it doesn't hang down and scrape going into steep driveways. The best way is to actually have it go up through the floor pans and then weld the pans too onto the connector. Makes it all really strong but it will mess with your carpet for rear seat passengers.

Lol.. I don't know for sure but I do know 1/4" 2x2 is thick and heavy. I use it sometimes in my gate business. Seems more like 4 wheel drive materials haha..
I seem to recall guys using 1x2x14ga.. I would think 11ga or 3/16 is better on the weight than the 1/4 stuff. Sometimes it's not about the thickness but the dimensions.. So 2x2 might be good..

carpet will be messed anyways as i have full length mustang pans in now i put in last month, i think i could get them pretty much flush with the pans, they are veryflat compared to the stock pans our cars come with so i may be able to weld them to the floor. i will have to take a look at it when i get back to the shop this week.

I used 3/16 2x2 I believe it is plenty stout. I can jack the car up in the middle and there is no bowing or flexing that I can tell.

Yes way overkill 11 gauge is really, factoryis (14 gauge) 1/4 wall is all just excess weight
What you want is 1x2 11 gauge for extreme apps and 14 for street cars

^^^ that man knows his stuff!

1/4 inch thick would be great if you're building a monster truck Comet though. And.. how cool would that be?! lol

PS.. you'll never get proper welds with that stuff to the floorboards either. You'll either burn through the floorpans.. or not get full penetration to the square stock. And it'll likely be both if you do try to use it anyways.

I guess a 1/4" would be a bit thick. I just looked up mine (Competition Engineering) and they are 2x2 .083" thick.

    :)

.125 wall is a pretty common tubing wall thickness and is plenty strong
