The F-series AM/FM Stereo units are probably as rare as the Mav units and are same as Torino except for front bezel and maybe shaft length... Got one around here somewhere($5 yard sale) but like the Fairlane unit, needs a input capacitor and output transistors... Also any of these Bendix units should receive a through bench test to be sure there are none of the intermittent issues these radios are famed for... I thought my Fairlane unit was ready for install until it started dropping the FM after playing a hour or so...
I did a little sleuthing through my car radio service literature and the 1971 part number is D1DJ-19A241-AA which is listed as '71 Maverick & Pinto... It has a smaller front bezel and apparently uses a unique under dash mount(dial looks kinda foreign-ish)... Also by looking at the PCB and part numbers, I'd say it was manufactured by Motorola... There is also a D2DJ-19A241-AA but I don't have service info for that one... For '73 there is a D3DA-19A241 listed for Maverick & Comet, pict is generic so I don't know exactly what it looks like... This one is built by Philco and is Stereo... In summation apparently the 1970 D0DA-19A241-AA is the only Mav/Comet radio that is basically a mono version of the '68-'71 Torino/Cyclone radio... Or is at least all Sams had listings for, they didn't always cover every model... They are a independent company that only business is/was provide info for consumer electronics servicing(eventually evolved mostly to TV info)...
My buddy sent the radio to my shop for testing. He was mistaken about the part number, it is a 1974 part number, it has a tag marked D4DA-19A171-BA. Anyone have a wiring schematic? The plug is missing.
I have only seen one other '73 Maverick AM/FM and it didn't have lines on the dial either. It's odd that the 'other '73 models like Torino & Mustang had the conventional dial with the separator line and hash marks. I wonder what dictated the unique face plate for the Mavericks.
I didnt even know the FM was available for a 70. Was it an upgrade option? Mine came with an AM mono only that I gutted and converted into a stereo mp3 preamp. Radio Mod Pics Here
With a base sticker of less than $2000, EVERYTHING was a option in '70, including AM radio... The FM mono(vs stereo) was no doubt specked to keep costs at a minimum...
My understanding is that the AM/FM mono in the early cars was a Dealer Only option .. not installed at the factory.
Could be an early production. The 08/72 1973 catalog talks about the AM/FM stereo, but does not picture it. The 01/73 revision catalog shows it and it definitley has the lines and hash marks. So do the ones in the Accessorys catalog. And yes, the AM/FM mono was dealer only option until after the start of the 74 model year. It's not listed in the 07/73 1974 catalog, but is listed as an option in the 12/73 revision. The early dealer installed ones were switched between am/fm with a knob behind the tuning handle. The factory ones were switched with the slide bar. One of the reasons you don't see more than AM radios was the expense. In fact for the price of the factory AM, you could have bought a aftermarket am/fm 8-track (although the speakers would have been extra). Factory sound systems were VERY expensive by the standards of the time. In fact, only thing more expensive than AM/FM factory stereo was Automatic (but not always) and AC.
I just looked in my dealer pricing book, for 74 the suggested retail price for am/fm stereo was $190.00....
Anyone have a price for the '70 AM/FM radio?? The stereo Torino version was $181 and that did not include rear speakers, just curious how much cheaper a non stereo version was...
I have the 1974 Dealer Accesories Price List and the D2DZ-18805-A AM/FM Mono was $133.85 (without antenna) and the AM/FM Stereo was $195.45 (also without antenna). It's part no. was D3DZ-18805-A. The Pinto radio's have different part numbers and prices, by the way. They also list Radio Chassis (don't know what the difference is) and the AM/FM Mono is part No. D4DZ-18806-A and it is priced at $124.30. The Stereo Chassis is part no. D4AZ-18806-B and it lists for $187.70. They show Stereo Speakers (4) as part no. D3DZ-18808-A for $69.50 and Stereo Speaker Kits with Hardware for $77.20. It's part no. is D3DZ-18819-B. The rear speaker for Am/Fm Mono radios are part no. D2OZ-18875-E and list for $15.00. The front speaker for the AM radio is part no. D3DZ-18819-A and lists for $8.35 (with hardware) and they do not show a front AM/FM mono speaker, so I assume it's the same. The radio antenna is listed as part no. D0DZ-18813-A and also no. D3DZ-18813-A and they both list for $7.00! Those prices do not include installation charges, nor local taxes of course.
