I am running a Weiand dual quad tunnel ram manifold on my Cleveland. The manifold top has no angle cut into the carb mounts so my carbs angle back the same angle as my engine. I have seen dual quad tops that are opposite angle cut at the carb mounts to level the carbs back out but just can't seem to find a source for a top. Anyone know where I might be able to pick one up? I don't know if I've ever seen a weiand TR with tilted pads for that Ford motor. I know the small and big chevies have tilted pads though. Might need to look at other brands or tweak them with some machine work. You might be able to use some spacers too.. but will still be into machine work of some sort. Kinda silly when you think about it though.. it's not like Chevy installs are the only motors with tail down slants in many body styles. How bad is your carb angle/s? Maybe just use some slosh inserts with jet extensions?
So, how much of a backward angle are they???????????? I doubt very much you will find a top for a Ford with angled pads.......as Gary said, I have a friend with a Chevy 427 and his Weiand is angled, but it's in a boat application. If the angle is just a couple of degrees I don't think I'd worry too much, if it's more than 5 degrees you could have issues. If you know how many degrees you could always take the top to a machine shop and them mill XXXX degrees off in the opposite direction to get them properly situated. I'm thinking it was 7 degrees back but I would have to check tonight when I get home - I had a hard time keeing the Cleveland down in front due to the MII cradle and the front mounted rack so I used spacers at the transmission mount to loose some of the angle but I'm not sure how much I lost until I check. This did come to mind but, no matter if you mill the actual carb mounting surfaces or the entire bottom of the top piece, you will also angle the original mounting holes and the threads srtill being at a 90% angle to the manifold. I put in a request at Summit for customer survive so I will see what they say about it. Would you think an angled top for a big block Chevy might work on the Cleveland bottom?
No, a BBC top will not fit a Ford bottom.............they are not the same intake.........top or bottom. One other idea.................when you know exactly how many degrees the motor is tilted back..................have a machine shop make a spacer that is in a wedge the same as the top gasket..........with the correct amount of offset in degrees.................would be like valve cover spacers only thinner and with a specific angle...................not sure what the cost would be, but the 5 degree spacers would set you back $70..........maybe that would be cheaper than having an aluminum spacer. I was kind of hoping that the dual quad tops were universal I do know one of my fellow races from my circle track days that has a machine shop and I think I'll give him a call and see if he will look at this for me - 70 bucks is nothing compared to the 220.00 that a new top would cost me, even if I could find an angled one I didn't realize Weiand got swalowed up by Holley - I'll certainly give them a call also All suggestions are appreciated :Handshake
what about just runnig them sideways? are you concerned about fuel slosh/starvation.. or just the aesthetics of the tilted air cleaner?
please keep us informed. Im going to be running the same set up on my 347 when its done and Ive been concerned with hat angle. I was hoping it was appliacation specific and mine would just turn out flat. I dont think the motors look right when they look tilted back. I would think they catch less air that way also.
I already have the carbs mounted sideways so that the primaries and secondaries line up more equally with the cylinders. I was concerned how the floats would adjust and what would happen under throttle, braking and cornering not being level to begin with. And yes, the carbs do have the look of being angled back to far.
I think oldrodder has it....have a spacer made to fit between the halves of the manifold with the proper taper.
The Cleveland along with the carbs has a 6 degree angle back to the rear. Now that is with the body shell being level on jack stands. If the car winds up sitting slightly higher in the rear, it may not be as bad as I first thought.
Oh..............so I assume that the front end will be lower than the rear....so that should help bring it back in line...........I would think....IMHO
