Finally putting primer on some parts.....

I sandblasted some parts and got them to the booth to put epoxy primer on.

Here is my primer of choice. CRE321 is a grey high build epoxy primer from PPG's Commercial Performance Coatings line. It is a light industrial product. Not typically used in the automotive field, yet has amazing direct to metal characteristics, has a high build and is rock solid. This stuff builds as well as any polyester primer out there! And, it's less expensive than most regular automotive grade primers because it is usually used in industrial settings.

And here with 4 coats of primer. Fifteen minutes between coats. They sat overnight and then I did a 30 minute bake the next morning just to make sure they were nice and cured.

So, I'm stuck in the basement of a house where a lady died, installing a furnace all day...looks like you had more fun. Everything looks awesome! :thumbs2:

A high build that's adecent price? Wow I'll have to see if I can order this from the auto store.. Or should I try the industrial paint supply? - cloverdale paint.

    Looking good btw.

And like Dave..he was stuck in a basement.. I was in a nasty attic I couldn't kneel in.. Rolling in the insulation trying to wire in some new pot lights for a kitchen Reno..had way more fun then both of us :(

Depending on what you are trying to achieve, the primer can be mixed 2:1 for really high build, 2:1:.5 with the .5 being a little reducer. This is how I use it. Lays down real nice and still gives me the build I am looking for. Or, 2:1:1 for a really smooth finish.

You will need to find a decent PPG jobber. May not have it in stock, but should be able to get it for you.

Back at it today. Although not as much time as I would have liked to spend. I really need to find a career that will let me work three days and have four off! Do you know of any? I need more time in the garage!

Anyway, I started off by cleaning up the garage. What a mess it had become!

With my dads help I pulled the motor and trans to get them out of the way. Back on the stand and all wrapped up now they are safe. I finished welding the support brackets on the cowl top after running out of welding gas a couple weeks ago.

I then trimmed the motor and bracket on the power windows so they go up and down nice and smooth without that Bang! noise from before. Both sides are good now. I then stripped the doors and removed them from the car.

I then moved on to the radiator support. With my new fender aprons the passenger side doesn't meet up with the support because of where the factory battery box was.

I cut the offending area out.

Made a new panel and shaped it to fit. Had to do this twice as I cut the first one too short when trimming it for a close fit. Really pissed me off to have to start the entire patch over again.

Here is the patch all tacked in place. I will finish welding it during the week. I have a friend with some dimple dies and am going to use them to put some fresh air holes in this panel. I need the air for the injection. I also need to fill in where the tape is now. I want to close up around the radiator for better looks and to direct the air into the radiator.

Once this is done, I will get the entire car stripped and spray on four or five coats of the CRE epoxy primer. Then it will be time for body work.

Nice job!!! This is definately a one of a kind Maverick build. You have a lot of ideas that i wish I would have thought of before getting so far along with my build.

    Again, awesome build!!!!!

    Thanks!

I know, I really wish they were a little nicer. But I think with a good sand blasting they will be ok.

It's good having friends in low places! Actually I have a good friend that has a fabrication shop and offered them up to me. He will do it to my design no charge!

    Glad the pictures helped.

Where are u getting the doorskins?
1.)Replacing the skins will be a delicate, time consuming operation?
2.) Are the skins spot welded to the frame?
3.) I am thinkin abt closing the slots in my core support too. Hope to improve cooling
I am learning a lot abt the cars construction following ur thread. I like what ur doing.

I found NOS skins on Ebay. I have had them for a couple years now. They pop up from time to time.

I spent years as a body man/ painter. I will have both skins on and in primer in one day.

I started the day off wanting to finish where I left off with my radiator support. I finished welding in the patch I made. Then moved on to filling in the areas right next to the opening for the radiator. I don't like the big gap that was there. So I made up some patches to close it up. I also had some rot on the bottom right corner that I cut out, made a patch for and welded it all beck up again.

Once that was al done and ready for primer I moved on to the body. I had a helper, my dad, came out to lend a hand. He da stripped the roof and both quarters while I ground all the welds from the quarter panel replacement, the cowl repair, and the rear body panel replacement. Lots of grinding!!

That's it for today. Tomorrow I need to finish grinding some welds. Then he and I will finish stripping all the paint off the door jambs and rockers as well as all the little nooks and crannies.

    More updates tomorrow!
