I know its not a comet or maverick piece, but I was hoping to tap into the knowledgebase of the more experienced car builders here. What I know by the part.#is it belongs to a 70 mercury montego, cyclone line, but I have tried their boards and they seem to have dried up. I Cyclone had a CJ model in 70,but the emblems appeared to be decals not cast badges. My brother had a pair of these in his inventory, but nothing corresponding to its origin. Any help would be appreciated. Brad[/IMG]
well.. damn it man!.. that one has me stumped because I could have sworn that the early 68 Fairlane's came with hard metal badging like that before they switched to the stickers.. but I can't seem to find a picture though. I have some old Musclecar ad's books that had a picture that may help but would be a matter of actually finding it. the part "D0" number also denotes a 1970 year as well.. so the plot thickens. If I do run across it.. and it will bother me so I will surely look.. I will post back about anything I find out. You might try the Torino forums since many of those guys have owned more of these particular cars than I ever will. Or maybe even the FordMuscle forum too.
It fits in the package very easily along with the mounting tabs and the part# is identical on the badge. Good call though, didn't think to match'em up. Brad
It's badging for a '70 Cyclone with 429CJ... The G in the part number denotes it's for Comet/Montego... Other than pre production models(of course that's the pictures all the ads used), no '69 Cobra ever got decals from the factory, all used the metal snakes... Decals are a '70-'71 thing...
That was my thoughts, but I found the part# to a/the cyclone cj fender badge and it was different and bigger plus I haven't been able to find a photo of them on the car. I'm not sure if they go on interior door panels, scoops, dash NADA. I'm stumped.
Those are fender badges. They were mounted down low behind the wheel opening. A friend of mine used to own one.
All I see are "429" badges on the fenders... http://www.google.com/search?q=1970+429CJ+Cyclone&hl=en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=Uv4jUd3iDOqs0AHHyYGIBA&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAQ&biw=1304&bih=750#hl=en&tbm=isch&spell=1&q=1970+429+CJ+Cyclone&sa=X&ei=Cf8jUc6LC4zC0AGUqoGYBw&ved=0CE4QBSgA&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=e8dec755cfe340de&biw=1304&bih=750

Nice car.. but that's not factory original badging. I had a friend who owned a 70' Spolier just like that one who I hung out with when I had my Torino GT and they only had 429 badges with no "CJ" above it like that one shows. Also.. when you peruse highly original/rstored car pic's on the web.. none of them have that "CJ" emblem either. I can't find my picture book either.. so I'm not much more help on the matter. I think you're really on the wrong site to find definate answers to that one though.
In 1969, the Cyclone CJ was similar to the Torino Cobra. It was basic stripped down car with the CJ engine. That model was gone for 1970, with the Cyclone, Cyclone GT, & Cyclone Spoiler being the only choices. The general consesus is that no '70 model Cyclones were sold with those "CJ" emblems, but they were planned and were installed on some promotional test cars, as well as being available through the parts dept. There are separate part numbers for right or left side "CJ" emblems. This was not uncommon and some other examples of parts never installed but available as replacement parts are : '71 Boss 302 decals, '68 Torino "427" fenderemblems, '69 "427" hood scoop emblems, & '68 Galaxie "427" fender emblems.
aww hell.. now I'm getting even more confused as I continue to look around now. lol I do know that the yellow car linked on this page here shows it in the Mercury ad(which I also know is in one of my old musclecar ad books as well).. but doesn't show it on many others(even one's that are supposedly "original"? I do also know that on Fords Torino.. the 429 fender badge was ONLY for base 429 Thunderjet equipped cars(exept for Cobra's).. and the CJ/SCJ cars did not get the same badging. Oh well.. that's a Ford for ya, I guess. The other thing that I'm positive of is that I really miss my Torino when I browse around looking at these cars. EDIT: I believe that jmgford nailed it. I was almost positive that it was 68' or 69' when they first used the "CJ" moniker. I'm also pretty sure that the old musclecar ad books I have shopw that same emblem on the stripped down version he spoke of above. If you think that's bad?.. go try and buy a u-joint for a 1969 Mustang without knowing when it was manufactured! Was it type "change order #1..or #2.. or #3"?.. LOL
