I want to switch the front drum brakes on my 1972 ford maverick to disc brakes any ideas on how to do this cheaply like conversion kits or other cars i can take the the parts from.
If I were to do it again, I'd buy a kit. Unless you find a donor with good, usable parts, I suggest you do the price comparison. Also, if the suspension and steering haven't been rebuilt yet, this is a good time to do it.
So what kit and suspension and steering would you suggest. I think this is what they want to know--at least that is what I would like to hear from all of you out there that have done it. I think there is a forum out there that talks about kits, but I dont recall the suggestions and ease of doing. IE isnt there a Mustang kit that fits right on without much for mods etc?
When I did mine, I got the parts from a forum member. As for kits, I remember reading something about someone installing newer Mustang disc rotors on drum spindles. If I remember, he was selling them in a kit but you'd have to do some searching on this site and others to see if they still offer them.
I don't know, I bought some used spindles with backing plates (years ago), then new bearings, new rotors, rebuilt calipers, new pads, and new flex hoses, wasn't a big deal.
Look in tech articles... I posted all the moog brand (best) parts I used in my 72 Comet front end rebuild. Find spindles from a Granada or Monarch, and the rest of the little parts you can get from auto parts store. I went manual steering manual brakes.
lots of cars in the junk yard have all of the parts needed. granada tbird mustang just measure your spindles that are on the car now and then measure the length of your spindle that connects to the tierod then go find another car with the same stuff or even slightly bigger. it wont hurt anything it go a little bigger youll just have to adjust the tierods (alignment that will have to be done anyway) it can raise the front end of your car a little but nothing a loop from your spring cant fix
Oh... when you swap drums to disc cut one full coil off each front spring with a hack saw or you will look like a Cesna waiting to take off. Don't cut with torch it will embrittle your springs
I am in the middle of this conversion: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=84618 Cant attest to performance but it has been smooth to assemble so far.
because disc brake spindle set a little taller therfor making the front end sit a little higher. and by cutting one coil off you drop it back down where it belongs. or if you wanted to go lower you could cut off two coils I wouldnt recommend cutting more than two coils on your springs. I dont think the spring will sit in place right if you cut more than two coils off
My car sat level before the disc swap.... slightly lower in the front. Cutting two coils would have been disasterous. One full coil only.
