Those 2 in. tubes are going to be pretty tight in there. You will have to cut your towers back about 3 to 4 in.I am building a 70 mav to drag race and my towers had already been cut when i bought the car.It looks like they are about 3 in. and previous owner had windsor in it and said there was plenty of room after that.If you run a stick in it, such as I am ,you will probably have to remove the master cyl. to get z-bar in.
The towers are being moved out 3" to 4". That is in the plan from day 1. It will have a top loader and going to use a hydraulic t/o bearing to get away from header/z-link issues. Thanks for the advice. SPark
My Maverick is only cut 2" and I wish it was 4". With the 351w and TF-R heads it is a really tight fit. If it were me I'd go as far as you can and 4" sounds good.
Thanks for the pics and comments. I see yours are notched, I plan to cut and move the entire tower out 3 to 4" like they did with the Boss 429 Pro Stock cars in 1970/71 which will also require a motor mount change. That will also widen the front track and get the tires out to the fender lip with 3.5 to 4" wide wheels. Will also have to extend the lower a-frame and tie rods to match the movement of the uppers. I really wish they hadn't notched the towers because I'd love to race the car in NHRA SM class like it did back in the late 70's and early 80's when it ran a Boss 302 with 4spd.
Have you.. or anyone else here.. ever seen anyone actually move the spring pockets out a bit further to allow a bit more to be shaved off the towers too? Reason I ask is that I'd like to move mine out when I go to coil overs.
So you're just moving the towers out, not the frame rails? Would it be possible to move the frame rails too? Then you wouldn't have to extend the lower a-arms. And I was wondering, when the towers get moved out 3-4" do the upper shock mounts interfere with the fenders or hood brace?
Here are some pictures of a famous Pro Stock Maverick with SOHC motor, and if you take a look at the one I posted earlier in this thread you can see how much they are cut back and down about 2" from stock. I just don't have any pictures of the other side of the spring tower. But to answer your question................No, I haven't.
From what I can find, they moved the towers out 4" on each side in 1970 Pro Stock Mavericks. A Boss 429 is 30" at it's widest point. They fit once the towers were moved out. The moving the entire frame rail is interesting. It would take a longer drag link, that is do-able. I need to spend some more time on my back looking and measuring. The new shock mounts they used were shorter when moving the tower. There is actually a notch in the fender bolt line. Stock 429 Boss Look at the top of the tower differences. SPark
If you moved the whole frame rail out you would have to do something about mounting the steering box. Perhaps cut that section of the frame from a donor car and add it to the inside of the relocated frame rail?
I thought on the Super Stock cars, that the front coil springs were just straightened up from their stock tilted in angle allowing the towers to be moved out on both sides without changing any of the A frames or track width. The coils would then still sit on their upper A frame perches but now be staright up and down
