Hello I want to ask you about Cragar Unilug S/S i buy them coz i like how they looks. I just need to ask you about lugs and washers. I dont know which one i have to buy to mount it good on wheels. Can someone let me know what i need to looking for? I need to buy good coz I dont have return, It will came to europe. Let me know coz i m confused whit this, coz i m reading a lot of good and bad opinion. Car is stock Comet 75. THX
I put Cragar SS Unilugs on my Maverick but would never buy them again. They are difficult to mount on the hubs and could I've not been able to get them balanced perfectly. The alloy center/steel rim Cragar SSs are Unilug but the all alloy Cragar SSs are not. The all alloy wheels cost more but worth it to avoid Unilugs in my opinion.
I totally agree with Jsarnold, unilugs suck and cannot be balanced, I have a set of Cragar SS that are for the ford bolt pattern and with these wheels you just need an acorn style lug nut, and no spacer washer. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more now so you can have a balanced set of tires/wheels. Yep!!

They are easy to put on. The secret I use is to put on the top lugnut half way, just enough so that the base of the nut is inside the hole, but the nut is not tight. The tire needs to be able to flop side to side. Rotate the tire so either of the opposite lugs is at the top, and put another nut on half way. Now, rotate so any remaining lug is at the top. The tire should still flop a little side-to-side, so start the 3rd lugnut and once it gets on halfway, the rim is centered. You can now either run them up with an impact wrench, or continue installing the others by hand, then run them up. You will need a certain sized washer between the lug nut and the rim. You can use Cragar brand washers, but I have been using Mr. Gasket washers from local auto parts store. The Mr. Gasket ones are thin and bend easily.
NOTE! If you just put on one nut and run it up with an impact, it will not be centered, and you will be replacing lugs after you strip or cross-thread a couple. I took my car in for a tire swap once, and the guy at the tire shop did this for me. Ever since then, I take the tires off the car, and take the rims and tires to the tire store, and install them onto my car myself, so I know it is done correctly.
That's close to how I do it. Only difference is after the first lug is started I put it at the BOTTOM, balance the wheel on it and then start the two near the top. Still a PITA and no success in getting them balanced. Balance isn't horrible, just not perfect. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone that does much highway driving.
Back in the '80s, I had a set of Keystone black "nuggets" that were Uni-lug, and I could never get them balanced properly. Never again.
Same thing I do. It doesn't HAVE to be the top two bolts, but I do them that way since they are already up there and I can rock the rim back and forth on the lower first nut. I have never had a problem. They run fine, no issues with balance. By the time you get the third nut started, they are completely centered. No more slop or play in them.
ONLY use Cragar lug nuts on Cragar wheels. Using an off brand lugnut with the wrong type of washer makes it more difficult to install the wheels, and you will possible scratch the wheels. One can get Cragar lugnuts from any place that sells Cragar Wheels, like JEGS for example. I KNOW Cragars.
And just HOW do you know cragars? I agree. The mr gasket washers i use have all bent and warped. They are junk. Going to buy american racing rims soon.
