Driving my car yesterday with no problems. 76 Ford Mav Inline 6. Today I start driving and it just takes so long to go into second gear? I added fluid because I was a little low... How do I fix this problem?
did it do better after adding the fluid? sounds like a vac. leak in the line going to the modulator valve or the valve itself. see if there is fluid in the line. Frank
It did a little better after the fluid but its still acting up a bit. I put two quarts and my dipstick told me it has fluid. Should I have added the fluid while the car was running or when the engine was cold??
Automatic transmission fluid is checked on level ground, at operating temperature, engine running and in PARK.
Apparently is what almost dry and when I added fluid it filled it. I checked my dipstick many times over running and not running and it's not over. Lets see how it drives thus afternoon
Make sure to only use fluid marked " type F ". You must check the fluid after driving at least 10 miles. Overfilling these transmissions can cause damage! As was said before, engine completely warmed up, idling in Park, on a level surface! If you have to check it cold, engine idling, fluid should just touch the bottom of the dipstick. This fluid expands greatly as the temperature goes up!
Found the problem. Shifting hose was brittle and worn. I put a new one on and just like that the shifting is back to normal
Good news! There is another one that goes from the modulator to the metal tubing. It is underneath the car at the rear of the transmission. You should replace it also.
