It's great to see the build progressing.

I appreciate all the documentation. Very well done.

The Comet is finally at the chassis shop for the chromolly cage install!!!!! Hopefully it doesn't take too long..... I will be going by every couple days to get some progress pic's of the work.....

With the car out of the shop I decided to get some things done in preperation of putting the car back together..... I figured I would start with a relatively easy one and get the rear end center section ready to go, it was already set up for the old Maverick but after selling the car I found out how loud the Detroit Locker was when just pushing the car so I picked up a Tru-trac unit to replace it with..... After double checking what I previousely set the back lase on the ring gear I removed the Locker and seperated the ring gear from it..... I found out the bolts I had in the locker were too long for the Tru-trac unit, The I tried to install the bearings on the Tru-trac and found a big issue that I did not have knowledge of..... Aparrently the 3.250 OD carrier bearings only come in a 2" ID which will not fit the Tru-trac due to it needing a bearing with a 1.781" ID bearing, whick will require a case with a 2.890" OD or 3.062" OD bearing..... So to use the Tru-trac unit it looks like I will need to buy a different case(happy, happy, joy, joy).....

Here's a couple pic's of the center section disassembly.....

you can get some races to work with the 603049 bearings that are thick that will fit the 3.25 case. i think toms differentials has them.

Thanks for the info, I will check that out..... I haven't been able to find anything yet myself and I would hate to buy another carrier if I don't need to.....

ya they are a rare thing. we usually get them from the gear shop in paramount CA. they are a distributor for toms so either of them should be able to set you up.

No progress on the cage yet!!!!! Mabye some day.....

With the Bryant I was able to find a set of thick bearing races that fit the 3.250" dia chunk and a 2.891" dia bearing(thanks again, Bryant)..... So atleast I didn't have to buy another chunk..... I got the gear set up today, everthing worked out great.....

I did get the rear end housing down so I could start cleaning it up, and get it ready to go in the car.....

Here are the races, bearings and new bolts I got this week so I could get the center section back together.....

and here it is assembled once again.....

Your friend must have been running some serious power adders to mess up that block,or those mains were over torqued.I just got a hell of deal myself, new 351w,forged pistons, roller cam & rockers,MSD dist.,electric water pump,balanced,70 model blk. & Roush hds,mtr has never been started.Don`t really like the hds and I know I will have to do a little port work to get flow up where I want it,but for $1750 it`s a good start. The guy had it for 5 yrs,he was going to put it in a pick up,I told him it probably would have been a little more than he needed,he is 80 yrs old and this truck is stock.

Wow! I would have loved to have gotten that deal. I'm looking for a nice 351w to stroke out for my 66 Cobra. It's got a 460 in it right now and I'm not too crazy a out it.

He was running 200 horse worth of nitrous on it, the car had run 9.80's with it..... Sounds like you got a good deal.....

I tried to touch up the paint on the rear end housing late yesterday afternoon, but it didn't work out so well..... It was lifting the paint beside the touch up..... So this morning I stripped the paint off the housing, cleaned it up and masked it then made a makeshift jig so I can paint it..... Unfortunately I did not have hardly any chassis paint leaft so I will have to get some more this week.....

In the meanwhile I decided to get the rear leaf springs down, dissassemble them, strip them so I can repaint them too.....

All this stuff was painted for the other car, but after being installed then removed and moved around my shop a couple times they got a few little marks in them..... I am probably being a little anal about it, but I just like things to be a certain way when I put them together.....

Here's the housing after stripping and being cleaned up.....

Here it is masked and proped up for paint.....

Here's the springs disassembled and ready for stripping.....

Here they are after being stripped(just need to mask the brackets and eyelets next week and they will be ready for paint).....

Very nice and clean...............it's been a long time since I've seen a 9" without any brackets for a four link/ladder bars/wheelie bars............it looks so nice simple.
Are those the split-Mono from CalTrak?
