I hear ya dan IM doing my homework now so I dont do something foolish like take my car out before its safe and ready. I definitely dont want to something stupid. like if Im lucky just smash my car after spending by time its done a FORTUNE or get myself killed. Im not good at gambling. I never have been. I always lose. so I wont be bringing the car out and trying to do anything with it until its done.I think a realistic time line for this thing to be ready is another 2-3 years if all goes as planned. I always say it will be done by next summer to keep the goal in what sounds like a short period of time to keep me motivated to finish it. in all honesty Im going to be scared to hit the gas when the car is done
the one thing you can do when you get it all together is detune it. dont put the supercharger on at first. drive that for a few days till you get used to it. then put the supercharger on and put the lowest boost pulleys you can get on it. drive that for a while till you feel fully confident. then start upping the boost with pulleys in steps till you max it out or scare your self. you do a lot of detuning with timing. by being aggressive with the timing retard you really can pull a good amount of power out.
good advice I hadnt thought of that. I was just thinking of trying to feather the peddle or have a rev limiter thats set WAY back
hey Big Ford are you gonna cut the cowl off? I have two cars one with and one without. the one with is pita and doesn't look as good either in my h/o.
Your right, no back seat, only sheetmetal tubs and subfloor back there. But this is my street car, tagged and insured, i drive it all over the place, although never too far because a 15-gallon cell at 4 miles per gallon doesn't get you too far. The only reason the motor is 10:1 compression is so I can fill up at any gas station with pump premium. I did do all the welding myself in my garage. I actually bought a Miller Mig welder and practiced for a while before I started the project. And I am no pro, it took me 6 years from start to finish, I went real slow and triple-checked every measurement before welding. You have some great ambitions for your car, take your time and go for it!
You got a point there! That was the best cowl hood I could find, but even with a 4" rise I only have 1" clearance above the dominator. I had to fabricate a custom air cleaner tray that I still don't like and have been cussing ever since!
where di you get that scatter shield on your motor? Im sure I can get one from summit or my local speed shop but Im curious to see where you got yours did you build that 460? I plan to build part of my motor. the easy stuff like heads intake carbs oil pan oil pump all that Im letting the machine shop put in the pistons bearings cam and crank
Not sure what you mean by scattershield. JW Trans bellhousing itself is SFI approved shield. Wish I could say I built the motor myself, but it is actually a crate engine available from Keith Craft in Arkansas. Have built many windsor small blocks, but I didn't feel I knew enough about the big block ford.
dont they call that aluminum plat on the front of your motor behind the water pump a scatter shield? Ive seen a couple of other cars here with one. just wondering where you got it. oh and a question related to the original subject what stall do you have in your trans? do you have a build thread anywhere? it would be great if I could check out all of the stages of your build. what do they mean when they say back half my car?
i was talking about the cowl vent panel It looks like your carb might hit that since you moved the engine back.
That is the front motor plate that holds the weight of the engine, there are no motor mounts. I got mine from Chris Alston, but you are correct, you can get one through Summit from a list of companies. This one came pre-drilled for a 460 block/water pump and I just trimmed it up and drilled it to fit my front suspension. "Back Half" means you are removing the stock rear suspension entirely, and replacing that with solid frame rails, larger wheel tubs, and new rear suspension, usually coil-over shock/spring setup with a ladder bar or 4-link setup. On a Maverick, that pretty much means no back seat, and all new sheetmetal for the rear floor area. I don't have a build thread on the site because most of my pics are too large to upload. Send me your email address and I can forward you all my build pics.
Sorry, forgot your second question: In the trans I have a JW dual-purpose 9" converter and it stalls at 4800 with the transbrake engaged. Just driving around on the street it stalls at 2000.
One other thing to consider Junrai, the combo you`re going to run,you might need some help tuning the mtr.To rich and you are fouling plugs,to lean and you are melting pistons.
I am running a T-5Z and king kobra clutch. Why? I wanted overdrive for cruising, something stronger than a crappy normal t5, and it was about 1595$ compared to 1100$ for a rebuild on a stock t-5. Oh and wanted it to fit with little to no modifications. (lazy) Most likely any decent power motor would explode even the t-5z allover the ground. It is a blast to jam gears tho!
