I really like the feel of a manual trans when your hard on it and its pulling you through the seat and then you get a seconds worth of release when you step on the clutch and then back throught he seat again when you slam that clutch out again but I dont want to try and drag rage with a manual and I dont know how well clutches hold up. I surely dont want to replace a clutch all the time. I dont want to work on my car much at all once its done. I want to get it to a happy tune that will let me go retarded fast and to where I dont have to tune it every time I start it.
their are 2 disk clutches now that can easily handle your power and are street friendly. its the transmission it self that your going to have problems with finding one that can take the power. you would want to look at the t56 tranzilla. i think its rated for around 800 hp. now as i said earlier, its hard to rate a stick shift for just horse power or torque capacity. you need to talk with the companys that make the transmissions and see what they can offer you.
yep.. and it's generally accepted that superchargers are harder on them than turbos because they are more "boost agressive" down low on initial takeoff.
Had a top of the line PA (Performance Automatic) C-4 that lasted less than a season. Bought a Mighty Mite X-6 C-4 and this will be 3rd season on it. Love the Mighty Mite. Fully rollerized Planetary.
I`ve pretty much figured out that I am going to need something like an adjustable Mccleod dual disc clutch just to handle the 500hp 351w I have,$1000 bucks. They have allen head bolts on the pressure plate so you can adjust it to slip just a little on launch so you don`t stress the trans. so much. Most of the high horsepower stick guys use them.
i have ran with great success a king cobra pressure plate with a dual friction disk behind a 625hp motor. i would expect it to work just fine with 500 hp. i dont see much need to spend around $1000 on a clutch when a $350 set up will handle it just fine with very light pedal effort also.
my thoughts exactly. another thing to consider is that many of the smaller dual disc setups need dedicated flywheel setups which only adds even more to the cost. there are also several large long throw single disc clutchs on the market that will easily handle 500+ horse setups.
Mine is not a street car..............but I'd never run spool on the street...I've see people that have and swear by them...............I just never would. I'm running a spool with 33 spline axles and mod'd N third member. I've got 4:56's and 15x13x31 M/T's. Back in the day when the car was running B/SM it had 10.5" wide slicks............but the car does hook hard with the 13" wide slicks and 13lbs of air.
hey John do you have a back seat in that car with that big of tires? Im still trying to figure out what size tires I can get away with and still have a back seat.
This is a race car.......................not a street car.....................so, no I only have 30" between the tubs..................although I guess you could put a seat in, but with the cage it would be a little hard to get into the back unless you were 6/7 years old. I would suspect that with the HP level you are shooting for you'd have to have at least a 10.5" tire width.................I would think you may be able to get by with a well built mini-tub...........................talk to Chris Alston and his guys about that.
I knew your car was a race car but some race cars still have a full interior. I talked a little about a back seat when I went to chris alstons place and they didnt recommend anything. he did tell me that I was going to have to stick with leaf springs if I want a back seat. strange did send me an email with a brace I should be using to supposrt the frame and keep it from twisting both in front of the rear end and behind. the braces covered everything from the back bumper to the trans tunnel
When the car ran NHRA B/SM it did require two front seats (race seats) but did not require a rear seat...........same as when I raced SS/IA a lot of years ago...............but did require carpeting throughout the car.....which I just tore out............so now the interior is bare. I just don't see too many purpose built drag cars that have a back seat..........although I guess you could...................just depends on how big your tubs are. Although my car is really old, the square tubing (basically "a back-half") really stiffens up the rear and ties it into the front subframe.............and on mine they have welded heavy plates and boxed in the floor where the front spring eye attaches to the body. The rear shackles are made of 1/4" steel and gusseted.........since the springs are a little longer than a normal Maverick.........mainly because of the ladder system.
sure would be great to see your car this weekend at the placerville show if you could make it. I would prolly be under your car more than looking around at the other cars that are there lol
I'd really like to be there but my knee is still letting me be that mobile yet. You are welcome to crawl under and over the car anytime..........
