Can someone please tell me if the door hinge bolts and plates self-tapping? Heat-installed? Expanded ends?

I don't know what you mean, but they come out easily, and reinstall easily, they look like regular bolts to me.

they are just bolt as the others stated..the ends of mine were right rusted and frozen in place....took a bit to get them out thought, may need heat/lube.

The door hinge bolts are not self tapping...Nore are the nut plates but...The end of the bolts were of the expanded variety...Why??? Dont know...They tend to relax once removed hence the no one but you (And me) haveing trouble getting them to re-start upon re-installation. As long as they start straight...Just run em down, they'll go in just fine.

Thanks everyone. The driver door hinge-to-post bolts came out 3/4ths of the way and stopped. I had to put pressure under the heads to get them out. Almost stripped the nut plates. I found the source of a "creaking" noise that has been there for years. The whole bottom of the hinge pillar was broken free. 'Had a friend weld it up and it's good-as-new. I'm really happy about this as the noise has annoyed me for years. It wasn't loud, but I knew it wasn't normal, and always irritated me that I could never figure out the cause.

    *Edited my typo

You should be able to replace the plate that the bolts thread into.

if you look behind the kick panel you can see the ends of the bolts. most of the time the threads that stick through the plate are rusted bad. lube them up good before removing them.

"Bottom of the hinge pillar broken loose..."

Like this? See post #2 in the following thread ...

    http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=55560

Take a good look at the top of the pillar, too while you are in there. The result of the weight of the door swinging around on a loose pillar can stress it near the top hinge attachment point. I had to weld mine up there, too.

Ironically, the dent in my drivers door just got fixed in the past two days.:thumbs2: (Note when I started the thread ... that door ought to be back on the car in a few days now, finally!)

Okay, the threads in the backing plates got screwed up from removing the expanded bolts (what a stupid idea Ford had there). Is there a source to get new door hinge backing plates for these cars?
