Anyone know where I can get 1076 bulbs for my Comet back up lites w/o buying a 10pack?
The 1076 has been discontinued the cross reference bulb # is 81542. I don't want to stock up w/ bulbs no one else needs but me.

I would try an old mom and pop established parts store. Getting hard to find them though. You never know what is on those dusty shelves. The newer chain stores only keep blister pack stuff.

That's what I have in mine. They are easy to get singly, or at least a pair! :)
I just found this chart, which lists bulbs, and specs for them. According to this your 1076 bulb has a double contact. Did you change your lamp sockets? I think all of us may find this chart handy!

Comets do not have grounded bulb sockets in the tail lights, so the two contact 1076 bulbs must be used. :yup:

I just learned something! Ok, according to the chart an 1142 bulb can be used. It will be just slightly dimmer, as it uses 1.44 amps instead of 1.8 amps. :)
Lots of edits on this thread! :) I just looked and NAPA has single 1076 bulbs! They were $1.80 at our store.

I have backup light sockets from '88 T-Bird in mine, uses 1156 bulb...

Those sockets look similar to orig and only require one locking tab be cut to fit...

So how difficult are 1142 to find?? My guess they are no more common than 1076...

They were all over on the web. I only saw them on online ordering, although I didn't go down through all the listings on the first page, I just wanted to see if the auto stores had them in stock. NAPA has both the 1076 and the 1142 bulbs in stock at my location. I'm guessing they would have pretty much the same stock across the country, at least where light bulbs are concerned. :)

Thanks for the info. I will ck w/ my local NAPA dealer. I was'nt sure of what came as OE bulb; I removed the bulb in an effort to get my BU lites workin and that was what I assumed the correct bulb.
I want to use replacements that don't need a socket change.

Also, a question to Comet owners: Does the inner lense/BU lamp operate the BU lamp or a combo tail and/or stoplite? My "inner set" lites have not worked since I owned the car so -- really don't know -- what Im suppose to have.

When I pulled the bulb I was puzzled to find out it had one element. I was looking for a second element. The wiring diaghram I have is for Mavericks and don't have the wiring colors on them for the Comet lites.
Are the 1157 bulbs in the outside lamps grounded by the socket base? I believe that's what is in my outer lamps..

Very interesting topic and valuable info on the bulb site submitted by Simpleman...

It's backup only with outer being tail & stop lamp...

Dual filament bulbs use the shell for ground and each contact connects to a separate filament... Dunno why Mercury had to be smart and use the oddball 1076, a single contact socket with the ground on the shell contact would have been just as good if not better...
