You may have something there Gene. I did my Sprint in a little over a year. The Comet is going on it's 7th year.
A little more progress Over the week of the Fourth, I made the time to finish making up the patch panels for the rear of the right side quarter - The top section was cut from a used quarter I got out of New York and the entire bottom was cut from one of those stamped quarters that you can get on today's market - The stamped quarter was such an evil fit between the wheel well and where it wrapped around the tail that I could not use it as one complete piece - A stock quarter has a tight 90 degree bend back at the tail panel and the aftermarket one was a rounded bend like the die was never designed as a 90 - that would have made fitting a quarter extension up to it impossible - I also made up a filler plate to delete the side marker light - The top quarter piece is fit and ready for weld but I still need to fit the bottom piece. I also got to a small piece in front of the right rear tire and that is also cut from the used NY quarter - That small piece is actually the last piece of outer skin that needed to be addressed - Some wheel well work, finish trans tunnel and a add a trunk floor is what is left of sheet metal work now - A lot of pieces cut and fit but now it is time to get to welding everything in
I found the same thing with the aftermaket quarters I bought a long time ago, the edge at the rear and at the door gap were rounded and not sharp and the horizontal body line was off by almost a 1/2". Good for a partial patch panel and not much else.
The stamped out piece fit the back of the wheel well lip pretty good but the very back of that piece was ridiculous. That area and underneath where the quarter meets the trunk drop is where these panels are missing metal from having been stamped with incomplete tooling. I can work with the rear of the piece as I need to fit a Shelby rear valance to it anyway.
Making good progress..... Any idea how many different cars you that have made patch pieces for your body repairs? I was just curious.....
That's a very good question. I just don't have a very good answer at 6 am on a Monday morning LOL! I might just go through my parts/costs list and see if I can come up with a total. You got me wondering now. I figure this car might be the most rust free Maverick in Pennsylvania now
This past weekend's progress The rust through on the back of the drivers side rocker was big. Some time ago I cut off the back of the rocker, a good sized piece of lower door frame and the lower section of quarter panel. Cleaned the remaining surface rust and treated everything with Eastwood Rust Encapsulator. Cleaned up my Rick Brooks replacement rocker, fit the piece and tack welded it in place. I'll go over it with more tacks before I call it finished
You might add two to the total since it came from Rick Brooks. That piece was probably from a car that it was added to before jk
Moving along It's been a while since I have updated my progress but I'm still at it and moving forward - all of the pieces that now make up my right rear quarter panel are all welded in using pieces from a good used take off quarter and a new stamped out quarter - the side marker light is also deleted and sealed up - the patch in front of the wheel well is also finished and the bottom of the quarter is welded solid to the rocker
