Ok, so I have a few questions. Does anybody know if there's a light bulb in the instrument panel; if so, how do you replace it? Mine went out and I have to turn on my headlight periodically when driving at night... And has anyone found some sort of Hayes repair manual or an original one anywhere? Much appreciated
They are behind the instrument cluster. There should be a page on here how to change them.I just put new ones in mine because the car sat for over 25 years.
You have 3 lights that come on to read the gauges then you got the idiot lights if something is wrong and turn signals and high beam lights. You can reach under the dash to service the lights. Twist the socket 90* and pull out the socket/light. The bulb plugs into the socket.
Could you find a link to it? And where is the light socket relatively located? Next to the steering column or immediately behind the instrument panel?
1) check the lights as stated. 2) check the fuses in the fuse box, on the firewall behind and above the pedals. 3) the headlight switch is very prone to failure, and is worth replacing. It can fail in a way that the headlights still work, but the instrument lights do not. I had to replace the headlight switch in both Comets that I've owned to get my instrument panel lights working.
Does anyone happen to have the fuse schematic or happen to know which one is for the instrument panel off the top of their head?
rthomas linked this a few days ago, great source. http://1bad6t.com/Maverick/repair/electrical_chassis.html rthomas, are you suggesting I can remove all of the cluster bulbs without removing the instrument panel? I don't see how the bulbs on the top can be removed without removing the cluster.
to me it's easier to remove the cluster...there may be enough slack in the cable and harness to just tilt it forward enough to get the bulbs out/in...just two screws to try it...
I would say depends on how big your hands are. If you have little girl hands your could do it. I can almost do it, but not quite.
