the parts car looks like a good candidate for resto rather than the one your building. one of everything is rusted and busted on that other car. the new one doesnt look as bad YET you guys have it good in a way because it seems mavericks and comets are everywhere but then again theyre all rusted out. here in california you can find them in good shape but they dont come up for sale very often or if theyre for sale they want tooooooooooo much for them because theyre not rusty there just wrecked or they have a FACTORY BOSS 302 in them
The parts car has wicked rust! The bumpers are missing because they fell off! I know the 72 is rough, maybe beyond rough, but I know I can save it. I dont think it will be much worse than most once its stripped down to a shell. Cowl, floor pan and quartes, lol. Im always up for a challange!
I bought this car last September and didnt see it in person until February. The seller either misrepresented the car intentionally or just didnt know how bad it really was. After reading posts here and looking into repairs, I have decided to continue looking for a better candidate to restore. There is way too much rust and body damage on this car. The donor car I purchased has a lot of good parts but has much of the same rust, so no body panels can be used. I am going to strip down both cars over the next year and store the good parts. I will sell off anything I have 2 of or parts I wont need. Would love to buy the Sprint that has the shock towers cut up, but I dont think I can part with that cash right now. Thanks for subscribing, I will start a new thread onceI have found a good rust free base I can afford.
I think that is the best course. No reason to fix rust when rust free cars are all over the place. Keep looking...you will find it.
Since I have decided to abandon this project and wait for a better candidate, I am going to use parts from this 72 and the 76 donor to make some changes to the convertible. I plan on changing the 74 into a 72 clone. I already have 72 doors and Grabber hood. I am finally going to do a small bumper mod. Im rebuilding the 250 and swapping it for my 200. Im using the power steering and steering column out of the 76 and also installing the power disk brakes. Im swapping the dash out for the 72 with the package tray. Im replacing my custom door panels for stock ones. I have a set of white ones coming from a Sprint. Im hoping by next years Roundup, it will be completly transformed. I will begin a seperate thread when I get started.
Update....I cant bring myself to scrap a car when I know I can get it to a daily driver state. Im taking some parts from it to use on my 74. Everything I steal I will replace with the stuff Im swapping out. Im also stealing parts from the 76 donor to use on my 74 like the power disc brakes. Not sure what to do with the A/C yet. I might put it in this project or sell it off. Seems poinless to put it in the convertible. Currently the front of the car is stripped and drivetrain removed. Im rebuilding the 250 for the 74 and will put my tired 200 in the project. I will post pics tomorrow.
I run into this scenario all the time when I part out a car. The thing is...the world is full of daily drivers. What there is a shortage of is Maverick/Comet parts. Your car will live on in lots of others. Part it out.
I could never do what you do Craig, I get attached to things, want to save them. I get what your saying and would do exactly that, but I dont believe it has many sellable parts. None of the sheet metal is any good. It has a worthless drivetrain, right down to the tiny rearend. The only good part on the inside is the dash and the kick panels. It has some decent glass and window trim. Not stuff I see come up on here as needed. Im gonna save it, it will be another Frankenmaverick, but it will drive down the road under its own power once again. Im not ready to pull the plug.
Im not sure what youre tryin to say John. I can take it 2 ways, knowing me Im getting backwards. Its never about the money for me with these cars, its more about preservation, parting out is a big part of that. Im grateful for people like Craig and Rick, its just not in me I reckon. Ive always been willing to spend more than a car was worth to fix it. The Maverick fits me perfect, cause I dont think anyone ever gets back what they put into them. Someone could drop 20k in a minute restoring one of these and only get half that back when they decide to sell it. So I figure Im ahead of the game only dropping a couple thousand if that and junking it when its toast. Eventually the rust will take that 72 to Mav heaven and then you guys can have whats left!
I'm trying to say that some people will see a car like that and say "I bet I could get $xxxx.xx if I parted it out" and others, like you, will say "I really want to save this old car even though its probably worth more in parts". So.... It's not always about the money, so do with it what you think is best.
And also nothing against guys who part out cars. I just hope they don't part out any good restorable cars.
