*** PLEASE DO NOT POST ANYTHING POLITICAL IN THIS THREAD... ...OR I WILL DELETE THIS THREAD. I just posted this for the fun of reading it, and general interest...NOT to stir things up... .....so anyway...Non-Political comments are encouraged. I have never heard of this Ford Maverick story before...so if it's been mentioned before... ...I've never noticed it, or I don't remember it...but it still feels like de'ja vu. *** Correction...I hadn't noticed when I first read this, that the Maverick was later dug back up, and then crushed into a cube. Thanks for the proof read catch Rasit Apparently, on February 20th, 1970.....a 1970 Ford Maverick, fresh off the Factory floor, referred to as Hugger Orange*, or Meadowlark Yellow/Freudian Gilt, was purchased at a Ford dealership in San Jose California, NEVER DRIVEN, pushed to a Campus, and buried 12 feet underground. *I've thought "Burnt Orange Metallic" was a 69 1/2 color, but I think they are mistaken about Hugger Orange. I've heard of some strange stories...but this is the strangest Maverick story I have ever heard: http://www.sfgate.com/green/article/San-Jose-car-burial-put-ecological-era-in-gear-3266993.php http://spartandaily.com/732/a-witness-to-a-car-funeral http://library.sjsu.edu/online-exhibits/car-be-buried-survival-faire The only other case I could find of a brand new car being buried, was a 1957 Plymouth, in this Time Capsule Story: .. At the Beginning: (Maverick assembly line, Ford St. Thomas Assembly Plant, March 3, 1969) And after the 100,000th Maverick was built, 32 Mavericks were lined up: (On September 12, 1969, production of the Ford Maverick reached 100,000 Mavericks) ...
If they were trying to make a statement about "the death of the internal combustion engine", you would think that the targeted car would have been one of the barges of that era that got 8 mpg on a good day.... certainly not a car that would have been considered economical. They might as well have buried a VW Bug. But, there was a lot of weed being smoked back then ...
Towards the end of the first article it says they later dug it back up and crushed into a cube so it actually doesn't exist any longer. What were they thinking? Must have had something to do with the good drugs from the 70's.....
You are right...oops! ..and thanks! I didn't see that when I read it. What a silly thing for them to bury the car in the first place, and I also agree with CaptainComet...I thought the same thing... ...they are burying a Maverick??? (because it was less expensive), when there were some really gas guzzlers then. LOL. I will make the correction to the first post.
In 1969 color code "Y" was Burnt Orange Metallic on the Mercury side, and Indian Fire over at Ford. Pretty sure that Hugger Orange was a name coined at General Motors (Chevrolet).
What a bunch of dough heads! Yeah.. they made millions of these cars.. but dumb asses like these are the main reason that we have to search and scrounge parts for the remaining survivors. They were expendable "economy cars" to most that got smashed, crushed, and/or left to rust away to nothing. Only reason they chose that car was because they couldn't afford one of the real gas pigs of the era. Cheap delusional bastards. lol @ krelboyne.. I love that sig! Makes me chuckle every time I read it.
If I could Edit the Title of this thread....I think I would re-title it: "1967 Born Maverick Enthusiast - Never Fact Checked His Scoop - Still Screws Up A Good Story Every Now And Then" Geez...I'm glad I don't work for a newspaper.
"NEVER DRIVEN" only from the... assy. line to the parking lot. from there to be loaded onto the transport. unloaded and driven into the dealership parking lot. then to the cleanup shop. then back to the lot. and only if no one test drove it before they sold it...
Yeah Frank, I added a little bit too much "poetic license" with that phrase also. It still seems ridiculous that a brand new, perfectly good car, would be buried, and then dug back up and crushed. I mean...think of all the non renewable energy they would have saved, if that gas guzzling backhoe wouldn't have been used. They should have dug the hole by hand if it meant that much to them.
