I've changed the whole ignition cylinder on my other cars before... Was cheaper than having it re-keyed

Haven't done it in a maverick.... But in a Nissan Stanza and an Olds Cutlass Cierra, you pull the steering wheel using a steering wheel puller (on loan from your local parts store) and then unscrew whatever is holding it in and screw the new one in. (y)

Is your ignition cylinder in the dash or column?

Try any other Ford double sided keys you have first, they may work on that worn cylinder. Wiggle and jiggle, you may get lucky. If it turns, then use a paperclip to release the cylinder and remove it the regular way.

If you cannot get it to rotate, get a small regular screwdriver and a pick (or a hairpin, or something else to rake the tumblers). It may take you some time, but it is the cheapest option. Once you can get it to turn, the cylinder can come right out.

Yes, do what he says. I had to do that to the Subaru I just bought. Used an old Nissan key from my downstairs neighbor and just wiggled and forced it until it turned. Don't force it so hard you bend or snap the key, but while wiggling they key also give some love taps at the cylinder and you should be able to bump it over. They haven't made a car ignition (with normal keys) that can't be bump turned yet.

Pull the lock cylinder out of the door. TAKE IT TO THE LOCKSMITH. Ask them to make you a key for that lock. The last time I did this it cost my $10....yes ten bucks.
