Ok, I understand what you are saying. Assuming the motor is good I'll ask the owner what he wants for the rest of the car minus the motor/trans/rear end(these I want for myself assuming they are good).........................and see what he say.
yep.. smart move if you've got the time and space to sell the chassis. Those cars can be completely rebuilt with new metal these days and that VIN is worth gold right now. If the motor is original to the car.. they're worth much more together than apart.. but it might still be worth the hassle if you want to rob the motor.
Actually you could potentially be leaving money on the table by leaving the Mustang carcass. Top loader 4 speed and N-case third member.
The problem is that with a "Salvage Title" I doubt the money would be there.....................if the car is as bad as I've been led to believe, it could take 40/50k+ to put the body/car back together..........and with a salvage title I doubt you could get enough money to make it worth while. A very good friend in Clackamas, OR, Gary Smith of Gary's Mustangs is one of the best Mustang restorers on the West Coast, and these figures come from him, and although he hasn't seen the car I believe it could be that kind of money..................so, personally I just don't think it would be worth it. I have already asked for the toploader to be part of the engine package and will ask for the complete 9" unless it's bent...........and even then I'd try to grab the N case...............but the carcass..................unless someone here would like to have it................I'll pass, although I will ask what he wants for it.
Unless the insurance co was involved, AKAIK there would be no salvage title, on a wreck from years ago probably not even then(I believe vehicle must have the newer 17 digit VIN as well)... The salvage is a recent scheme cooked up so if the vehicle is wrecked again, they won't have to pay full value...
I am just repeating what I have heard until I get there Sunday, but the car was insured............and don't forget I am in Caliiiiiiiifornnnnnnniiiiiiiaaaa, one of the first states to issue Salvage Titles.......besides I would never buy a wreck and pass it off as anything other than totally restored collision car...........it's not ethical in my book..........and even if there was no salvage title the car was totaled in a collision and that would never bring the kind of money a real non-collision car would............enough said. Do you know what an NOS 70 Ford Mustang quarter goes for....$$$$$, for me it just doesn't make any since..........IMHO
maybe I missed it, but is the car a boss302 car? or a cougar, or just a car the engine was in. In reality, what the difference if it runs or not? short of the block being cracked, it doesn't really matter. I own a 70 boss eliminator, and have been a member of the boss302.com forum for 10 years, the motor is worth the money because of all the parts. and its worth more parted out than complete. does it have a doz carb? exhaust manifolds, the correct dist? 69 valve covers are chrome, not aluminum. I would buy it running or not if the price is right. good luck Duane
After it's fully restored, a highly collectible car like a Boss 2 it doesn't make much difference what condition it was in prior, main issue is it worth finding all the correct pieces...
I haven't seen the car, but it is supposed to be an early production Boss302. It doesn't have a shaker hood and is supposed to be original from the pan to the air cleaner. I have seen a couple of early Boss302 cars and at least the ones I've seen have chrome valve covers and the top to the aircleaner was also chrome. The casting number was given to as a C8OE-6051-B.............so we will see. I really want the motor/trans............and put it in something.........like a Maverick...........or?????? I hear what you are saying, but I don't want to buy something that turns out to be a boat anchor............I did that with a 63-1/2 427 Galaxie many years ago and won't do it again...........and the price is good enough to just buy it without making fairly certain is a good motor, or at least a good candidate for a rebuild.
you should try to buy the car, if its complete, it has to be worth 20,000 with all the original parts. ive seen junk go for that. if you have any question on the engine stuff, pm or email me. good luck
I vote for the "or" .....and no shock towers ! Regardless of how the engine sounds, you'll want to pull it apart to check it out. If it has original pistons, replace them. They are famous for cracked skirts. First B2 engine I bought back in the early 70s had 6 out of 8 cracked.
Of course I'm a little late on this thread, but I wouldn't mess with the factory fuel system. I would use an old squeeze bottle and just fill the front bowl up through the bowl vent, and if it starts, just keep filling it until you are happy that it runs. It takes a while to run the bowl dry.
with a boss 302 I would leave the shock towers in, ive never gad any desire to remove my towers, and ive had a boss 302 in it since 85
