I have An early 4 lug 8 inch rear and I was wondering if the spline count is the same as the later 5 lug 8 inch axles. I was thinking about switching the third member from the 4 lug rear to the 5 lug. Basically I want to know if they are compatible.:hmmm:

all the factory 8" rears use 28 spline axles.. whether they be open or trac loc.

    Correct ........ :)

The problem with an easy swap is the bearing size ..... this thread will help explain.

Center sections will swap from a 4 to 5 lug no problem...Axles will not due to bearing size.

hmmm?.. the few that I've swapped on early Mustangs must be different then?

Well.. luckily you guys chimed in to fill in the blanks and steer him in the right direction here then. Learn something new everyday. (y)

EDIT: on the rethink.. makes perfect sense and I must have used the same axles and just swapped the pumpkins out, I guess.

Early Mustang have tapered tubes...Maverick doesn't

Either one would be a good choice at that price but...You will have to step up to 31 spline axles (Not a bad thing) If you plan to put ALOT of torque through them.
