    Hello,
So there I was yesterday, getting--as the indicator showed--about a half tank of gas in my '71 Mav, I barely drove five miles. This morning it showed about a quarter tank, and as I leave the driveway, it was on empty. I stopped, immediately opened the hood, didn't see any gas spurting out, looked under, didn't see a torrent of gas pouring out, and otherwise the engine ran well. Is it the sensor? I'm guessing it is, but I'd like a second opinion. Thanks much Maverick/Comet people!

    Hello rthomas771,
Thank you, for the information on the indicator. I had used the wrong wording to describe that the problem was the tank float, not the dashboard gauge. Oddily, today it's working right, but I will get it replaced.

    Hello,
Usually, I don't drive it too much. But my daily driver needs repairs, so I'm taking the Mav out a little more. I'd been told that there are no identical replacements for the sending unit, that the one I have has to be repaired. Would you know if this is true?

If it's just the float they are still available new. A related story, my gas gauge acted funny for several years. Finally I needed to remove the tank and coat the inside to get rid of a rust problem. When I removed the sending unit and emptied the tank I found a golf ball-sized rock, two 12" sticks, a candy bar wrapper, and a kitchen paring knife inside. No doubt my young son and his friends were to blame. The sticks were kinda soggy and draped over the sending unit float arm, made for some crazy readings.

    Hi Dave B and bmcdaniel,
Thank you for the info on the float. Is replacing the unit something I can do with common tools? Of course I'd do it with the tank empty.

what's the mustang one you have in your tank 71 gold? or di you replace the whole tank with a mustang one AND if you just replaced the sending unit with the mustang one what's the part number on it.
hell when you get the one from auto krafters it's the better part of $200 bucks with taxes and shipping. I need 3 for different cars and that becomes holly crap expensive. :)

I think it is more likely that it is the float acting up, but something else to check is that the clip that plugs into the gauge cluster can work loose on one end or the other, meaning that half the stuff in the cluster works fine and other things will have a problem. Had that happen on mine, and just a little push on it fixed all kinds of ills.
