I have been trying to get my new holley 600 setup for 3 months now. I had to have the first one replaced. The carb has an electric choke. When the car starts the rpms are very very high. Which holley says is normal. I do not have a tach hooked up but it sounds like the 3k range to me. The other problem is the butterfly never opens up. The car runs fine with autolite and other holley I have. I am sure that it does not have any vacuum leaks. Is this just the electric choke not adjusted right. If so what steps should I follow. I dont have any experience with these chokes. Here is the link to what I have. Also the motor is a 302 with an edelbrock intake. http://www.holley.com/0-80457S.asp Thanks Matt
Sounds like maybe the fast idle cam is out of adjustment. I didn't watch the whole video.. but if this one doesn't cover it.. do a search on Holleys other vid's or similar on youtube.
I watched that video. No matter what adjustment I make the engine just runs super fast and the butterfly never opens.
then your choke is broken?.. or the transition slots are likely out of proper adjustment range. Usually want about .020 -.030 exposed. If you need more than that on the primary side?.. your secondary plates need to share the load by adding some there to be able to take away from the primary's requirement to achieve proper idle speed.
The choke on the first one was broke thats why they replaced it. I have been trying to get a refund by they will not work with me. I guess I bought a $325.00 piece of junk. Just my luck something simple turns out hard.
I wonder if it was assembled incorrectly. The spring in the choke needs to engage the arm that connects to the rod properly or it won't work. Kind of an insulting question and I don't mean for it to be but do you have power to the choke at all times?
If I want the butterfly open I have to manually push the cam down. Even after that the car is just running so fast I wouldn't want to even try to put it in gear.
It's been a long time since I've used or adjusted an EL choke.. but IIRC.. you have to "set the fast idle cam" by fully opening the throttle plates. This primes the system with a full pumpshot.. and seats the cam on it's highest idle notch. Dunno.. maybe this choke is differernt now.. but worth asking holley about to get this sorted out. This is the best advice I can give you here. If the thing still isn't working correctly after replacement?.. send it back again and act the squeaky wheel so they want to get rid of you. It's frustrating and tough to maintain composure.. but diplomacy and tact goes a long way here. You're a consumer in the USA and you're not without some rights.
I am going to give them a call tomorrow and see what they say. You are correct on the idle cam adjustment.
