Everything from the coil to the plugs is new, (dizzy was removed and cleaned up/point set) but Im still having some cold engine issues. It's got a definite, steady miss. THe miss will climb with the RPM. It's so steady it feels like a stuck valve, but it goes away as the car warms up. Another problem is on cold mornings (<35F) the idle lunges untill the car warms up. Like i said its got new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, and set the point. New fuel pump & filter, and adjusted the choke for the winter. Can't think of what else to do?
A vacuum gauge will help figure out the problem. Could have the choke too rich, float level too high or too low, dirty carb passages, air leak between carb and intake or throttle shaft, bad vacuum hose.
Missgapped plug/fireing order incorrect comes to mind.Did you drop any of the plugs on the ground while installing em?? that will ruin a plugs porcelin insulator(crack it)or smash the ground electrode shut...Good luck
Definitley sounds like the issue i am having with my 75. I am a novice, what is the power valve? I am prepared for the flame out so go ahead!
Thanks for the replies yall. Got some good idea on where to start. The miss seems to have subsided, but it still lunges some. In fact, I started it to let it warm up this mornin. Came back out to find it lunging and producing a good amount of white smoke... Brought the idle up and the smoke countinued. Shut it off and restarted it and the smoke was gone. Hopefully it was draggin some oil through the crankcase ventilation? The carb is a carter YF, so no power valve correct? kamadelaney, that's the good thing about this forum... no flaming. Lord knows Ive asked some stupid crap.
Sounds like you have a dead cyl... do a compression test and see whats up.Could be a bad valve. The white? smoke indicates something burning in the cyl that shouldnt be there. You may have a bad head gasket...does your engine loose coolant without leaving a drop on the ground??? Or is the smoke blue in color(indicates oil burning)I hope you just have a dead plug...Good luck...
Smoke could have been blue. Wind was blowing good this mornin, so it didn't stick around long. It's got a one month old head gasket... So hopefully that's not the issue. Ill break out the compression tester tomorrow. Ive been putting that off for... a few years... for fear of the results
Could have just been humidity too.Was it damp this morning when you started it up?? you can get a fair Idea of condition with a vacuum guage too.Hook it up to manifold vacuum and run it.If the needle bounces around...you have a valve/cyl sealing problem.did you do anything to the head while it was off for the gasket swap??
Cold front was blowin through... Humidity was somewhere between zero and nothing The head came off to get some broken manifold bolts off. The car stopped burning oil completly after that job, (new valve guide seals) so it was a little alarming to see all sort of smoke at idle.
You guys got a little chilly down there huh.Seems like you have more than one problem Bob.I would go through all the basics first, including your new parts.Make sure the fireing order is correct, wires are good...cap rotor etc...do a comp test or vacuun guage test.look for vacuum leaks all that good stuff.Do you still have the 1 barrel carb on it?? they are notorious for cracking at the base as well as the EGR spacer cracking.Good luck my freind, let us know what you find. Pete
Yep. Carter 1bbl. Rebuilt that too not to long ago. Hell, I think most of the car is new.... Anyway. Thanks for the help. Hopefully I can find something wrong tomorrow.
My 75 is not smoking and the compression is good. I assume I am having carburetor issues since it stalls when I take corners. Thoughts?
