Anybody use or consider using a newer model car's climate control assembly in their car? It'd take some custom work, but I'm thinking about using parts from a 90's-2000's Ford of some sort in place of the stock heater box, AC, and ducting. I don't want to pony up the money for a Vintage Air setup, and my car was non AC. I'm not really concerned about the space it takes up, my glovebox was never usable so I'm not attached to that space and I'll be making a custom lower dash anyway. Anyone have any experience with this or any reason to believe it wouldn't work?
it should be possible. i was thinking of using the fox mustang controls on the stock ac box. they use the same type of vacuum switch and cable set up so it should work.
If you can make it fit nicely, I think it would be great. The original HVAC system is so hard to get to for making repairs.
I'm going to explore some different Ford heater box housings and see what fits best. We've got an Expedition here that blows air so cold that the AC has almost never been actually turned on. The heater box is probably too big, but something from a Taurus, Contour, or Mustang would probably be fine. I've also contemplated the idea of replacing the rear defogger with something better, maybe the rear heater units from an expedition? That or aftermarket defroster strips, but I'm not sure those are compatible with window tint.
